Abstract

An Ansatz based on an etalon function generated by the problem itself is used in order to obtain a uniform asymptotic approximation of the 3D wave function for the scattering by a non-central potential. The obtained uniform asymptotic approximation removes the singularities at the caustics that occur in the 3D WKB approximation. The scattering amplitude provided by the uniform asymptotic approximation contains the poles that are the fingerprints of the system. The comparison of the obtained uniform asymptotic approximation of the 3D scattering wave function with the exact scattering wave function shows the versatility of the Ansatz based on an etalon function generated by the problem itself.

A new uniform semiclassical wave function for single surface and multisurface scattering

Michael F. Herman

A procedure for the evaluation of one-dimensional uniform semiclassical wave functions is explored. This form of the approximate wave function is tested for the case of an exponential potential and is compared to the exact quantum mechanical and WKB wave functions. It is found that the uniform approximation provides a very accurate representation of the exact wave function, even at the turning points of the classical motion, where the WKB approximation diverges. It is demonstrated how correction terms can be constructed, leading to a formal expansion for the exact wave function. The individual terms of this expansion each involve a finite number of reflection points with uniform semiclassical propagation between these reflections. The analysis is extended to multisurface (nonadiabatic) problems, removing the turning point singularities which are generally present in semiclassical formulations of nonadiabatic problems.

Semiclassical calculation of quantum-mechanical wave functions for a two-dimensional scattering system

Stephen K. Knudson, J. B. Delos, B. Bloom

The semiclassical theory developed by Maslov and Fedoriuk is used to calculate the wave function for two-dimensional scattering from a Morse potential. The characteristic function S and the density Jacobian J are computed in order to obtain the primitive wave function. The incident part shows distorted plane-wave behavior and the scattered part shows radially outgoing behavior. A uniform approximation gives a wave function that is well-behaved near the caustic.

Scattering theory without large-distance asymptotics in arbitrary dimensions

Wen-Du Li, Wu-Sheng Dai

Abstract In conventional scattering theory, by large-distance asymptotics, at the cost of losing the information of the distance between target and observer, one imposes large-distance asymptotics to achieve a scattering wave function which can be represented explicitly by a scattering phase shift. In this paper, without large-distance asymptotics, we establish an arbitrary-dimensional scattering theory. Arbitrary-dimensional scattering wave functions, scattering boundary conditions, and phase shifts are given without large-distance asymptotics. We give a discussion of one- and two-dimensional scatterings. Moreover, we also suggest a dimensional renormalization scheme to remove the divergence encountered in singular-potential scattering.

Uniform asymptotics of eigenfunctions for the three-body Schrodinger operator in one-dimensional case

V. S. Buslaev, S. B. Levin, Jacob Schach Møller +1 more

The three‐body scattering problem with finite pair potentials for one‐dimensional case is investigated. The asymptotic function χ0, which satisfies the three‐body Schrödinger equation in whole configuration space outside of compact domain Ω, where the supports of all three pair potentials cross each other, has been presented in a mathematically rigorous way. For large distances |x|→∞ the function χ0 determines the asymptotics of the solution up to the circular wave with smooth coefficient in whole configuration space. The method is based on analogies between few‐body scattering problem and diffraction one of the plane wave on the system of half‐transparent infinite screens. Presented here formalism are believed to be useful also for the few‐body scattering problem of higher dimensions.

On the leading term of asymptotics of the $n$ like-charged quantum particles scattering problem solution

Ya. Yu. Koptelov, S. B. Levin

An ansatz describing in terms of formal asymptotic decompositions a leading term of asymptotics of the $n$ three-dimensional like-charged quantum particles scattering problem solution is suggested. The description of the solution in those asymptotic configurations in which it was known earlier (for example, $n=3$), coincides with the previously known constructions \cite{BBK,z1,am92,BL2,KL}. It is shown that the Schredinger equation discrepancy for the suggested ansatz decreases faster than the potential uniformly in all angle variables at infinity in configuration space. An assumption is made about the structure of the leading term of the asymptotics of the scattering problem solution related to the $n$ three-dimensional quantum particles interacting by a broad class of slowly decreasing pair potentials.

A WKB-Type Approximation to the Schrödinger Equation

Stanley C. Miller, Robert H. Good

A method of approximating solutions of the one-dimensional Schr\"odinger equation is presented in this paper. The method closely resembles the usual WKB approximation. Whereas in the ordinary WKB method the exponential function is used as the basis of the approximation, in this paper the solutions of an arbitrary Schr\"odinger equation are used. The general advantage is that by proper choice of the arbitrary equation an improved approximation can be obtained. The method is illustrated by treating the potential well and potential barrier problems when there are two turning points. The approximations to the wave functions are continuous even across the turning points. The barrier transmission problem is treated uniformly for energies above and below the peak of the barrier.
