Abstract

Quantum computational logics provide a fertile common ground for a unied treatment of vagueness and uncertainty. In this paper we describe an approach to the logic of quantum computation that has been recently taken up and developed by the present authors. Special attention will be devoted to a generalisation of Chang's MV algebras (called quasi-MV alge- bra) which abstracts over the algebra whose universe is the set of qumixes of the 2-dimensional complex Hilbert space, as well as to its expansions by additional quantum connectives. We fur- thermore explore some future research perspectives, also in the light of some recent limitative results whose general signicance will be duly assessed.

Quantum Computational Fuzzy Logics

Cesarino Bertini, Roberto Leporini

The theory of logical gates in quantum computation has suggested new forms of quantum logic, called quantum computational logics. The basic semantic idea is the following: the meaning of a sentence is identified with a quregister (a system of qubits in a pure state) or, more generally, with a mixture of quregisters (called qumix). Following an approach proposed by Domenech and Freytes, we apply residuated structures associated with fuzzy logic to develop certain aspects of information processing in quantum computing from a logical perspective. For this purpose, we introduce an axiomatic system whose natural interpretation is the irreversible quantum Poincaré algebra. Such a system allows to establish a completeness theorem for the treatment of quantum information.

Logical and Algebraic Structures from Quantum Computation

Antonio Ledda

The main motivation for this thesis is given by the open problems regarding the axiomatisation of quantum computational logics. This thesis will be structured as follows: in Chapter 2 we will review some basics of universal algebra and functional analysis. In Chapters 3 through 6 the fundamentals of quantum gate theory will be produced. In Chapter 7 we will introduce quasi-MV algebras, a formal study of a suitable selection of algebraic operations associated with quantum gates. In Chapter 8 quasi-MV algebras will be expanded by a unary operation hereby dubbed square root of the inverse, formalising a quantum gate which allows to induce entanglement states. In Chapter 9 we will investigate some categorial dualities for the classes of algebras introduced in Chapters 7 and 8. In Chapter 10 the discriminator variety of linear Heyting quantum computational structures, an algebraic counterpart of the strong quantum computational logic, will be considered. In Chapter 11, we will list some open problems and, at the same time, draw some tentative conclusions. Lastly, in Chapter 12 we will provide a few examples of the previously investigated structures.

Fuzzy quantum logics

María Luisa Dalla Chiara, Roberto Giuntini

Quantum logic is a particular example of a fuzzy quantum logic. QL is semantically characterized by the class of all quantum MV algebras. The standard quantum MV algebra is based on the set of all effects in a Hilbert space. From the physical point of view, effects represent physical properties that may be noisy and ambiguous.

Strutture Algebriche nella Computazione Quantistica

Maria L. Dalla Chiara, Giuseppe Sergioli

Shi and Aharonov have shown that the Toffoli gate and the Hadamard gate give rise to an approximately universal set of quantum computational gates. We study the basic algebraic properties of this system by introducing the notion of Shi-Abaronov quantum computational structure. Finally, we investigate the possibility of an algebraic abstraction from Hilbert-space structures, by proposing the notion of Toffoli-Hadamard algebra. From an intuitive point of view, such abstract algebras represent a natural quantum generalization of both classical and fuzzy-like structures.
