Abstract

Cluster entangled states are often used as the fundamental resources for one-way quantum computation. In this paper, we put forward a scheme of generating the spatial cluster entangled states of Laguerre–Gaussian modes in a large-Fresnel-number degenerate optical parametric oscillator operating below threshold with type I phase matching, which is pumped by two spatial Laguerre–Gaussian modes with the same frequency. The nonlinear parametric process of each pump mode satisfies momentum, energy, and orbit angular momentum conservation. Eleven-partite spatial cluster entangled states of Laguerre–Gaussian modes can be produced in the optical mode comb under feasible experimental condition, which can be demonstrated by using the entanglement criterion proposed by van Loock and Furusawa.

Large-scale continuous-variable dual-rail cluster entangled state based on spatial mode comb

J. Zhang, J. J. Wang, Rongguo Yang +2 more

In recent continuous-variable (CV) multipartite entanglement researches, the number of fully inseparable light modes has been increased dramatically by the introduction of a multiplexing scheme in either the time domain or the frequency domain. In this paper, we propose a scheme that a large-scale (≥ 20) CV dual-rail cluster entangled state is established based on a spatial mode comb in a self-imaging optical parametric oscillator, which is pumped by two spatial Laguerre-Gaussian modes with different polarization and identical frequency. A sufficient condition of full inseparability for a CV dual-rail cluster entangled state is used to evaluate the degree of quantum entanglement. It is shown that entanglement exists over a wide range of analyzing frequency and pump parameter. We have found a new scheme that uses the optical parametric cavity to generate a large-scale entanglement based on optical spatial mode comb. The presented system will be hopefully as a practical entangled source for quantum information.

Continuous-variable cluster-state generation over the optical spatial mode comb

Raphael C. Pooser, Jietai Jing

One-way quantum computing uses single-qubit projective measurements performed on a cluster state (a highly entangled state of multiple qubits) in order to enact quantum gates. The model is promising due to its potential scalability; the cluster state may be produced at the beginning of the computation and operated on over time. Continuous variables (CV) offer another potential benefit in the form of deterministic entanglement generation. This determinism can lead to robust cluster states and scalable quantum computation. Recent demonstrations of CV cluster states have made great strides on the path to scalability, utilizing either time or frequency multiplexing in optical parametric oscillators (OPO), both above and below threshold. The techniques relied on a combination of entangling operators and beam-splitter transformations. Here we show that an analogous transformation exists for amplifiers with Gaussian inputs states operating on multiple spatial modes. By judicious selection of local oscillators, the spatial mode distribution is analogous to the optical frequency comb consisting of axial modes in an OPO cavity. We outline an experimental system that generates cluster states across the spatial frequency comb, which can also scale the amount of quantum noise reduction to potentially larger than in other systems.

Entangling the optical frequency comb: Simultaneous generation of multiple 2 × 2 and 2 × 3 continuous-variable cluster states in a single optical parametric oscillator

Hussain Zaidi, Nicolas C. Menicucci, Steven T. Flammia +3 more

We report on our research effort to generate large-scale multipartite optical-mode entanglement using as few physical resources as possible. We have previously shown that cluster-and GHZ-type N-partite continuous-variable entanglement can be obtained in an optical resonator that contains a suitably designed second-order nonlinear optical medium, pumped by at most $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (N 2) fields. In this paper, we show that the frequency comb of such a resonator can be entangled in an arbitrary number of independent 2 × 2 and 2 × 3 continuousvariable cluster states by a single optical parametric oscillator pumped by just a few optical modes.

Manipulation of continuous variable orbital angular momentum squeezing and entanglement by pump shaping

Zhi Li, Xulian Guo, Hengxin Sun +2 more

Spatially structured quantum states, such as orbital angular momentum (OAM) squeezing and entanglement, is currently a popular topic in quantum optics. The method of generating and manipulating spatial quantum states on demand needs to be explored. In this paper, we generated OAM mode squeezed states of −5.4 dB for the L G 0 + 1 mode and −5.3 dB for the L G 0 − 1 mode directly by an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for the first time. Additionally, we demonstrated that the OAM mode squeezed and entangled states were respectively generated by manipulating the nonlinear process of the OPO by controlling the relative phase of two beams of different modes, thus making two different spatial multimode pump beams. We characterized the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) entangled states by indirectly measuring the squeezing for the H G 10 ( 45 ∘ ) mode and H G 10 ( 135 ∘ ) mode, and directly measuring the entanglement between the L G 0 + 1 and L G 0 − 1 modes. The effective manipulation of the OAM quantum state provides a novel insight into the continuous variable quantum state generation and construction on demand for high-dimensional quantum information and quantum metrology.

Large-scale multipartite entanglement in the quantum optical frequency comb of a depleted-pump optical parametric oscillator

Reihaneh Shahrokhshahi, Olivier Pfister

We show theoretically that multipartite entanglement is generated on a massive scale in the spectrum, or optical frequency comb, of a single optical parametric oscillator (OPO) emitting well above threshold. In this system, the quantum dynamics of the strongly depleted pump field are responsible for the onset of the entanglement by correlating the two-mode squeezed, bipartite-entangled pairs of OPO signal fields. (Such pairs are independent of one another in the undepleted, classical pump approximation.) We verify the multipartite nature of the entanglement by evaluating the van Loock-Furusawa criterion for a particular set of entanglement witnesses deduced from physical considerations.

Generation of a continuous-variable quadripartite cluster state multiplexed in the spatial domain

Chunxiao Cai, Long Ma, Juan Li +5 more

As a highly entangled quantum network, the cluster state has the potential for greater information capacity and use in measurement-based quantum computation. Here, we report generating a continuous-variable quadripartite “square” cluster state of multiplexing orthogonal spatial modes in a single optical parametric amplifier (OPA), and further improve the quality of entanglement by optimizing the pump profile. We produce multimode entanglement of two first-order Hermite–Gauss modes within one beam in a single multimode OPA and transform it into a cluster state by phase correction. Furthermore, the pump-profile dependence of the entanglement of this state is explored. Compared with fundamental mode pumping, an enhancement of approximately 33% is achieved using the suitable pump-profile mode. Our approach is potentially scalable to multimode entanglement in the spatial domain. Such spatial cluster states may contribute to future schemes in spatial quantum information processing.
