Light shifts and magic wavelengths for heavy alkaline earth elements: Ba and Ra

Umakanth Dammalapati, Bodhaditya Santra, Lorenz Willmann

In this paper, we investigate light shifts of heavy alkaline earth elements barium (Ba) and radium (Ra), which are interesting for optical lattice clocks and for permanent electric dipole moment searches. Detailed knowledge is required in the design of efficient loading of atoms from a magneto-optical trap into an optical dipole trap, to facilitate Doppler cooling while trapping and to achieve longer lifetimes of the trapped atoms with reduced heating rates. The wavelength dependence of light shifts of the n s 2 1 S 0 ground state, the n s n p 3 P 1 and n s( n − 1)d 1 D 2 excited states in barium ( n = 6) and the n s 2 1 S 0 ground state, the n s n p 3 P 1 and n s( n − 1)d 3 D 2 excited states in radium ( n = 7) are calculated. Several magic wavelengths in the visible and infrared regions accessible with commercial lasers for optical dipole trapping of Ba and Ra are identified.

Broadband, unpolarized repumping and clearout light sources for Sr^+ single-ion clocks

T. Fordell, T. Lindvall, P. Dubé +3 more

Future transportable optical clocks require compact and reliable light sources. Here, broadband, unpolarized repumper and state clearout sources for Sr+ single-ion optical clocks are reported. These turn-key devices require no frequency stabilization or external modulators. They are fiber based, inexpensive, and compact. Key characteristics for clock operation are presented, including optical spectra, induced light shifts, and required extinction ratios. Tests with an operating single-ion standard show a clearout efficiency of 100%. Compared to a laser-based repumper, the achievable fluorescence rates for ion detection are a few tens of percent lower. The resulting ion kinetic temperature is 1–1.5 mK, near the Doppler limit of the ion system. Similar repumper light sources could be made for Ca+ (866 nm) and Ba+ (650 nm) using semiconductor gain media.

Active Ion Optical Clock

Wei Zhuang, Tonggang Zhang, Jingbiao Chen

In this paper, we propose a scheme of active ion optical clock with detailed pumping method, lasing states, output power, linewidth and light shift. Using 171Yb+ ions in a Paul Trap we propose to utilize a Fabry-Perot resonator to realize lasing of active optical frequency standards. The quantum-limited linewidth of active 171Yb+ ion optical clock is narrower than 1 mHz. Based on the mechanism and advantages of active optical clock at ion optical clock transition frequency, this new laser light source as a stable local oscillator, will be beneficial to the single-ion optical clock, which currently is the most accurate clock.
