Nonlinear optics with incoherent light

Abstract

Summary form only given. Recently we have shown using solid hydrogen that stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) can evolve spontaneously from the weak-coupling regime to the strong-coupling regime in which parametric anti-Stokes generation occurs without the restriction of phase-matching. In the present work, we extend this strong-coupling SRS to a more general parametric Raman sideband generation. We show using solid hydrogen as a nonlinear medium that the adiabatically-prepared Raman-coherence can beat with broadband incoherent fluorescence light and efficiently replicate the incoherence nature to the Raman sideband.

Sideband generation using strongly coupled Raman coherence in solid hydrogen

Summary form only given. There has been increasing interest in optical processes using strong-coupling and induced transparency, termed electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Although the idea of EIT started for resonant /spl and/h-scheme (Raman scheme), the idea has now been extended to far-off resonance Raman system. We have reported the spontaneous evolution of strong-coupling through stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) using solid hydrogen. In the present work, we extend the strong-coupling SRS to a more general parametric Raman sideband generation. We show using solid hydrogen as a test medium that, in tile far-off resonance Raman scheme, the strongly-coupled Raman coherence can beat with very broad-band laser radiation and can efficiently copy the broadband nature to Raman sidebands without restriction of the phase-matching, and that this efficient copying occurs on the negative Raman detuning for which the strongly-coupled eigenstate evolves to the anti-phased state (dark state).

Stimulated Raman scattering in solid hydrogen

K. Hakuta

Summary form only given. We show using solid hydrogen as a medium that strong coupling can be realized for a high-density solid medium even under far-off-resonant conditions. It is shown through the experiments of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) that in terms of the parametric anti-Stokes generation process, the phase matching is self-induced without the stringent restriction of the medium as a consequence of the strong coupling spontaneously established through the SRS process.

Nonlinear optics in solid hydrogen

We show through experiments of stimulated Raman scattering how solid hydrogen (parahydrogen) can open new perspectives on nonlinear optics. Two phenomena are described: One is the self-induced phase matching in parametric anti-Stokes stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in which the phase matching is self-organized automatically without the stringent restriction of refractive-index dispersion of the medium, and the other is the extremely slow coherence decay behavior for the Raman transition that may result in the Raman width of 80 kHz full width at half maximum (FWHM).

Stimulated Raman scattering of solid hydrogen in the strong-coupling regime: measurement of the coherence decay time

M. Katsuragawa, J. Z. Li, Masaru Suzuki +1 more

Summary form only given.Optical processes with strong coupling and quantum coherence are opening various new possibilities beyond the limit of conventional optical processes. Recently, we have extended these optical processes to a high-density solid medium using solid hydrogen for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) process. We have found that the strong-coupling in high-density solid-medium results in a new phenomenon of self-induced phase-matching in which the parametric anti-Stokes generation process self-organizes the phase-matching without the strict restriction of the refractive-index dispersion of the medium. In order to assess the mechanism of the self-induced phase-matching, the essential issue should be to measure the coherence decay time for the Raman transition quantitatively. The purpose of this work is to report on this issue using solid hydrogen crystal of nearly pure parahydrogen. The coherence decay for the Raman transition was measured by using time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering.

Sideband Generation Using Strongly Driven Raman Coherence in Solid Hydrogen

Jian Liang, M. Katsuragawa, Fam Le Kien +1 more

Parametric Raman sideband generation is investigated using strongly driven Raman coherence in solid hydrogen. We show that the Raman coherence prepared with two coaxial single-mode lasers beats with multimode laser radiation with very broad bandwidth and efficiently replicates the broadband nature to the Raman sidebands without the restriction of phase matching. We demonstrate that this efficient replication occurs mainly on the negative side of Raman detuning, where the medium adiabatically follows the antiphased state.

Stimulated Raman scattering in solid hydrogen based on adiabatic preparation of anti-phased state

M. Katsuragawa, Jian Liang, Fam Le Kien +3 more

Summary form only given. Optical processes with strong-coupling and quantum-coherence are opening various new possibilities beyond the limit of conventional optical processes. Recently we have extended these optical processes to a condensed phase using solid hydrogen for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) process. The essence of the work was the self-evolution of the strongly-coupled coherence using one excitation laser. In the present work we extend the above work to a more controllable scheme using two lasers. The point of the present report is the measurement of the SRS characteristics to the two-photon detuning. We show that the parametric SRS processes favorably occurs on the negative detuning side, in which the coherence can be evolved adiabatically to the anti-phased state coherence.
