Abstract

A class of rate-compatible (RC) quasi-cycle low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes that have linear encodable complexity and low error floor is presented. To ensure linear encoding complexity, a lower triangular (LT) form for the parity part of the mother parity-check matrix is designed. By the designed LT form, a recursive encoding strategy is proposed. This encoding strategy can achieve linear encodable complexity, which is completely proportional to the code length. To guarantee good performances for a wide range of code rates, a layered short-cycle optimization algorithm is designed to obtain good girth distribution, and a layered density evolution algorithm is used to optimize degree distributions of each code rate. Then, a class of RC QC-LDPC codes can be obtained by both extension and puncturing from the optimized QC-LDPC mother code with rate 1/2. Simulation results show that no error floor is exhibited for the proposed RC QC-LDPC codes at FER=10-5. The practical performance at BER=10-6shows a gap of about 1.477 dB to the Shannon limit.

Quasi-cyclic LDPC codes for fast encoding

Seho Myung, Kyeongcheol Yang, Jaeyoel Kim

In this correspondence we present a special class of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes, called block-type LDPC (B-LDPC) codes, which have an efficient encoding algorithm due to the simple structure of their parity-check matrices. Since the parity-check matrix of a QC-LDPC code consists of circulant permutation matrices or the zero matrix, the required memory for storing it can be significantly reduced, as compared with randomly constructed LDPC codes. We show that the girth of a QC-LDPC code is upper-bounded by a certain number which is determined by the positions of circulant permutation matrices. The B-LDPC codes are constructed as irregular QC-LDPC codes with parity-check matrices of an almost lower triangular form so that they have an efficient encoding algorithm, good noise threshold, and low error floor. Their encoding complexity is linearly scaled regardless of the size of circulant permutation matrices.

Construction of Quasi-cycle Low-density Parity-check Codes with Low Complexity Degree

Haiyan Cao

Based on the structure of parity-check matrix of RU algorithm,a class of Quasi-cycle Low-density Parity-check(QC-LDPC) codes with complexity is constructed by selecting sub-matrices reasonably to restrict and consisting of lower dual diagonal matrices.Simulation results show that not only the proposed codes have lower complexity, but also the error-correcting performance is better than QC-LDPC codes randomly constructed and practical Block-LDPC codes in the additive white Gaussion noise channel. It can get 0.3 dB Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR) gain at a Bit Error Rate(BRE) of 10-6.

Design of rate-compatible QC-LDPC codes

Xia Wei

Rate-compatible quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check(QC-LDPC)codes were designed with two construction methods. The first technique is based on code division, where a high-rate mother code is progressively divided into lower and lower rates;the other one adopts fractional row combination to yield a range of higher and higher rates form a relative low-rate mother code. The two methods cover different ranges of rates.Simulation result shows that the performance of these constructed rate-compatible QC-LDPC codes is as good as that of single rate codes which is straightly constructed based on the primitive elements of finite fields.

Design and performance evaluation of low complexity encoding methods for LDPC codes

Ambar Bajpai, Lunchakorn Wuttisittikulkij, Piya Kovintavewat

There is an important breakthrough in the field of forward error correction techniques, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. These codes have potential to approach the Shannon limit with reliable performance on a given channel, known as the channel capacity. Recently, researchers pay much more attention towards LDPC codes because its performance is better than Turbo codes. However, the LDPC code is the best when it is an irregular code and uses with a very large block-length. Although, the short block-length LDPC codes perform not so well, they are easy to implement in various practical applications. Therefore, there is still a demand of new development on the encoding side of LDPC codes for various ranges of code rate and code length so as to capable of using in many applications. This thesis proposes the development of quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes for column weight 3. In the first part of this thesis, we propose a new construction algorithm of QC-LDPC codes for medium to large block-length by combining QC-LDPC codes of small block-length as their component codes, via Chinese remainder theorem (CRT). Such component codes were constructed by permuting each column block sequentially to attain the desire local girth. After combining all component codes to generate an expanded parity-check matrix, the resulting girth is greater than or at least equal to the maximum girth of the component codes. Simulation results show that our proposed construction method of the parity-check matrix significantly outperforms the other well-known existing methods in terms of low error-floor, simple structure, high performance, and can reduce encoding complexity. In addition, this thesis also proposes two new construction methods for QC-LDPC codes, namely a base matrix method and a subtraction based method. A base matrix based method is a simple, less computational complexity method for constructing the exponent matrix (3, K) of girth 8, 10 and 12 of QC-LDPC codes. Another method is a subtraction method, which has a similar exponent matrix as a base matrix method and has a girth at least 8. Results indicate that the LDPC codes constructed from these two methods have flexibility for arbitrary block-column length K and have a similar BER performance if compared to existing methods.

Design of rate-compatible efficiently-encodable generalized LDPC codes

Tingjun Xie, Stephen G. Wilson

We study rate-compatible (RC) puncturing algorithms for efficiently-encodable (EE) generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes of short-to-moderate blocklength. EE-GLDPC codes are systematic codes and well-suited for puncturing, thus they are able to address a rate constraint issue, which is an obvious disadvantage of traditional GLDPC codes. In this work, we propose systematic puncturing algorithms for EE-GLDPC codes. Simulation results show that the systematic puncturing has considerable performance improvement over random puncturing. In addition, the punctured codes, like their mother codes, have the advantage of good error floor performance, which can be a very important feature in practical applications. Finally, it is also demonstrated that, compared with LDPC codes, GLDPC codes have a better error floor performance, but suffer from a decoding threshold loss at high puncturing rates; nonetheless the tradeoff between error floor and decoding threshold loss can be conveniently implemented via the method of doping.

Combinatorial optimization for improving QC LDPC codes performance

Irina E. Bocharova, Boris D. Kudryashov, Rolf Johannesson

Techniques for searching for good quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC block codes of short and moderate lengths which are suitable for practical purposes are studied. To facilitate implementations only codes whose parity-check matrices having bidiagonal structure of their submatrices and consequently having low encoding complexity are considered. The problem of finding QC LDPC codes with the near-optimum frame or bit error rate performance is split into two independent steps: searching for the near-optimum column degree distribution of the parity-check matrix together with the best base matrix for this degree distribution and searching for the near-optimum labeling of the chosen base matrix. Sets of parameters and criteria for both steps are introduced and discussed. They allow further reduction of the search complexity without significant loss of the search optimality. New QC LDPC block codes of various code rates are obtained and their BER and FER performances are compared with those of the LDPC block codes as well as the turbo codes defined in the IEEE 802.16 WiMAX standard.
