Optical control of a magneto-optical trap for cesium atoms

Swarupananda Pradhan, B. N. Jagatap

Loading of a magneto-optical trap for cesium atoms is studied in presence of an auxiliary (control) laser beam that is tuned to 6s 1/2 F=4 → 6p 3/2 F' = 3,4,5 hyperfine manifold. It is shown that the steady state number of trapped atoms is enhanced or suppressed depending on the frequency, intensity and position of the control beam in the trap. The overall result is to provide an ability to optically control the number of trapped atoms without having to change the parameters of the trap. Detailed parametric studies of the control laser assisted optical manipulation of a MOT are presented.

Intensity dependence of optical suppression in photoassociative ionization collisions in a sodium magneto-optic trap

Luís Gustavo Marcassa, R. J. Horowicz, Sérgio Carlos Zílio +2 more

We report the intensity dependence of photoassociative ionization collisions in a sodium magneto-optic trap (MOT). A suppressor beam with frequency tuned 600 MHz to the blue of the MOT trapping transition reduces the rate constant of the inelastic process by as much as a factor of 20 at an intensity of 8 W ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$. A comparison with theory shows good agreement.

Design study of a Magneto-Optical Trap for laser cooling of rubidium atoms.

E. Gustafsson

In this Master's thesis a Pyramidal Magneto-Optical Trap for rubidium has been designed. The trap is intended to be used in Atomic Physics courses for demonstration and laboratory exercises. The theory for cooling and trapping 85 Rb and 87 Rb is developed.A detailed design of a low-cost and robust MOT is presented. Two frequency locked laser systems have been built. Most of the components necessary to build the MOT have been identified, borrowed or purchased. The mechanical support to hold a pyramidal mirror has also been realized. The report discusses how to complete the construction of the MOT.
