Abstract

Abstract The Wigner-Moyal approach is applied to investigate the dynamics of the Gaussian wave packet moving in a double-well potential in the ‘Mexican hat’ form. Quantum trajectories in the phase space are computed for different kinetic energies of the initial wave packet in the Wigner form. The results are compared with the classical trajectories. Some additional information on the dynamics of the wave packet in the phase space is extracted from the analysis of the cross-correlation of the Wigner distribution function with itself at different points in time.

Quantum Phase Spase Representation for Double Well Potential

Dmytro Babyuk

A behavior of quantum states (superposition of two lowest eigenstates, Gaussian wave packet) in phase space is studied for one and two dimensional double well potential. Two dimensional potential is constructed from double well potential coupled linearly and quadratically to harmonic potential. Quantum trajectories are compared with classical ones. Preferable tunneling path in phase space is found. An influence of energy of initial Gaussian wave packet and trajectory initial condition on tunneling process is analyzed.. Coupling effect on trajectories and preferable tunneling path for two dimensional potential is studied.

Comparisons of classical and quantum dynamics for initially localized states

Michael J. Davis, Eric J. Heller

We compare the dynamics of quantum wave packets with the dynamics of classical trajectory ensembles. The wave packets are Gaussian with expectation values of position and momenta which centers them in phase space. The classical trajectory ensembles are generated directly from the quantum wave packets via the Wigner transform. Quantum and classical dynamics are then compared using several quantum measures and the analogous classical ones derived from the Wigner equivalent formalism. Comparisons are made for several model potentials and it is found that there is generally excellent classical–quantum correspondence except for certain specific cases of tunneling and interference. In general, this correspondence is also very good in regions of phase space where there is classical chaos.

Quantum tunneling process for double well potential

Lifei Wang, Qin Zhang, Feng Xu +2 more

Quantum tunneling effects of Gaussian wave packet in one- and two-dimensional double well potentials are investigated using quantum Liouville equation for time evolution of Wigner distribution in phase space. It is shown that a trajectory-based solution of this problem can be constructed by the entangled trajectory ensemble simulating the evolving quantum state. Quantum effects arise in this approach as a breakdown of the statistical independence of the trajectory ensemble. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Spreading of a free wave packet

Hai-Woong Lee

The spreading of a free wave packet and its relation to classical and quantum dynamics are examined. The phase-space formulation using the Wigner distribution function provides a convenient representation in which each phase point of the distribution follows a classical trajectory and the spreading occurs as a result of classical dynamics. A different formulation using a different phase-space distribution function, however, does not allow this simple interpretation of the spreading.

Quantum dynamics by stochastic trajectories in phase space

Konrad Singer

It is shown that quantum dynamics in phase space according to Wigner's equation can be realized by the superposition of a large number of classical stochastic trajectories carrying variable weights. The method is tested numerically by application to the motion of a wave packet in Gaussian single and double potential wells.

On the phase-space catastrophes in dynamics of the quantum particle in an optical lattice potential

M. Ćosić, Srdjan Petrović, Stefano Bellucci A

We have investigated the dynamics of a quantum particle in the optical lattice potential. Initially, the quantum particle was represented by a Gaussian wave packet, located in the center of the well. The corresponding Schrödinger equation was solved explicitly by the method of the Chebyshev global propagation. Obtained solutions were also used for the construction of the Wigner functions. We found a great number of local abrupt changes of the solution shape. To explain this behavior, we used the fact that structurally stable systems, which form the largest class of the low dimensional dynamical systems, can be modeled and classified according to the catastrophe theory. All important features of the exact solution were explained on the basis of the mathematical properties of the catastrophic model. Such an approach enabled us to extract relevant information out of numerical solutions without employing any kind of approximations. We have investigated the influence of the Wigner catastrophes on the details of the quantum-classical correspondence breakdown. The wave packet was found to expand rapidly, filling the whole classically available area of the phase space. It was found that its self-interference pattern saturates quickly. A region of the phase space emerges in which the Wigner function oscillations transform into the singularity driven fluctuations. Once this region covers the whole area of the phase space, a wave packet dynamics enters into the new regime where its Wigner function fluctuates around the ergodic average. It will be shown that all mentioned processes are caused by the proliferation of the catastrophes and their mutual interactions.
