Stratification and switching fronts in a coherent state of excitons sustained by optical pumping

Yu. I. Balkareǐ, Alexander S. Cohen, Vladimir S. Posvyanskii

Instabilities of a coherent state of Wannier-Mott excitons sustained by a resonant pumping wave in cavity and cavityless cases are analysed. In particular, instability with respect to spatially periodic stratification can exist. The period of such stratification is L approximately L ex =(h(cross)/m gamma ) 1 2/, where m is the effective exciton mass, and gamma is the reciprocal exciton lifetime. The results of numerical modelling of corresponding non-linear structures are presented. For 'exciton-pumping' bistability, non-monotonic switching fronts are demonstrated numerically.

Experimental observation of optical precursors in optically pumped crystals

Zong‐Quan Zhou, Chuan-Feng Li, Guang‐Can Guo

We experimentally observed optical precursors in optically pumped crystals using polarization-based interference. By switching the user-programmable medium among the fast light, slow light, and no-dispersion regimes, we observed an unchanged polarization state for the wave fronts. The robust polarization-encoded information carried by wave fronts suggests that precursors are the preferred carriers for both quantum and classical information in communication networks.

Spatial solitons in semiconductor microresonators

V. B. Taranenko, Carl O. Weiss

We describe experiments showing the existence of spatial solitons in semiconductor microresonators. We describe the manipulation of such solitons in view of technical applications: switching solitons on and off by coherent, as well as incoherent light, reducing the light power necessary to sustain and switch a soliton by optical pumping, and the limit in which independent solitons become so strongly bound that they form a coherent hexagonal pattern, marking the maximum information storage density.
