The Logical Analysis of Quantum Mechanics

David L Hurd

Published Mar 1, 1974• 109 citations
Publisher

Abstract

E Scheibe Oxford: Pergamon 1973 pp viii + 204 price £6.50 With the aid of a meticulously detailed account of the formal basis of quantum mechanics, Professor Scheibe has provided a precise characterization of the orthodox interpretation of the theory. His penetrating analysis reveals subtle distinctions within the compass of orthodoxy and offers a framework within which to locate those issues that have provoked more drastic departures from the now traditional standpoint.

Logical and Epistemological Studies in Contemporary Physics

David L Hurd

Robert S Cohen and M W Wartofsky (eds) Dordrecht: D Reidel 1974 pp viii + 462 price Dfl 55 The contributions collected in this volume cover a varied range of topics from the philosophy of science, but special attention is given to foundational issues in quantum mechanics. In this latter field, particularly valuable are the several discussions which attempt to place in perspective those recent formal investigations which centre around the elaboration of some version of the idea of a 'quantum logic'.

Problems in Quantum Mechanics

R. C. Johnson

F Constantinescu and E Magyari Oxford: Pergamon 1971 pp vii + 410 price £5.70 This is a translation of a book apparently first published in eastern Europe two or three years ago and aimed at advanced undergraduates and beginning research students. It contains 319 solved problems, arranged in a dozen subject groups which include not only reasonably high level treatments of the standard topics (mathematical formalism, onedimensional models, angular momentum, atoms and molecules, various approximation methods) but also large sections on systems of identical particles and second quantization, on scattering theory and on relativistic quantum mechanics (the last two subjects together occupying over a quarter of the book).

Mechanics: Classical and Quantum

Péter Faragó

Thomas T Taylor Oxford: Pergamon 1976 pp xi + 399 price £10 (cased), £6.50 {paperback) As stated in the preface ‘… this book is intended to give students a solid grounding in the principles of quantum mechanics after leading them to these principles via the medium of analytical mechanics’. The success of this eminently sound approach hinges on the selection of the material and its presentation.

Quantum Mechanics for Mathematicians and Physicists

Nicholas Kemmer

By Ernest Ikenberry London: Oxford University Press. Pp. xii + 269. Price 64s. The number of quantum mechanics texts available nowadays is so large that when another one appears it is a priori unlikely to show any great novelty of treatment or to promise to score heavily over its rivals. Choice of one particular treatment for teaching or learning purposes must become a matter of personal preferences not easily justified in detail.

Conceptual Foundations of Quantum Mechanics

David L Hurd

Bernard d'Espagnal California: Addison-Wesley 1971 pp xvii + 493 price $12·50 (cloth) $6·95 (paper) Ever since the advent of quantum mechanics, the attempt to provide a clear and comprehensive account of the fundamental physical implications of the quantum formalism has been fraught with conceptual problems. Over the years an extensive body of literature has accumulated, to which some of the most distinguished quantum theorists have contributed.
