Optical Bullet Holes: Robust Controllable Localized States of a Nonlinear Cavity

W. J. Firth, Andrew J. Scroggie

Stable localized states are predicted for a saturable absorber in an optical cavity. These ``bullet holes'' resemble 2D spatial solitons, and we demonstrate an optical memory array scheme based on them. A topological argument shows that one or more unstable localized states coexist with the stable bullet hole.

Optical Bullet-Holes

W. J. Firth, A Lord, A J Scroggie

A saturable absorber in a cavity is shown to sustain stable bleached areas which can be created by applying a short, localized address pulses (optical bullets). These bullet-holes can be controlled and configured as a "spatial soliton" memory array. The existence and stability of these states is investigated by taking advantage of their cylindrical symmetry, and similar methods show that the Kerr cavity can also support stable localized states.

Bistability of the soliton amplitude in a ring resonator with nonlinearly absorbing media

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

Perturbation theory is used in a study of the dynamics of an optical soliton in a ring resonator with a nonlinearly absorbing cell and external pumping. It is shown that the influence of impurity atoms with a saturable transition may give rise to a hysteretic dependence of the soliton amplitude at the exit from the resonator on the amplitude of a monochromatic pump field.
