Excited states of 4He droplets

Abstract

We study low-lying excited states of ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ clusters up to a cluster size of 40 atoms in a variational framework. The ansatz wave function combines two- and three-body correlations, coming from a translationally invariant configuration interaction description, and Jastrow-type short-range correlation. We have previously used this scheme to determine the ground-state energies of ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ and ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ clusters. Here we present an extension of this ansatz wave function having a good quantum angular momentum L. The variational procedure is applied independently to the cases with $L=0,2,4,$ and upper bounds for the corresponding energies are thus obtained. Moreover, centroid energies for L excitations are calculated through the use of sum rules. A comparison with previous calculations is also made.

Variational Study of 3He Droplets

R. Guardiola, Jesús Navarro

We report variational calculations of energies of (3)He(N) droplets ( 20</=N</=40), using Aziz atom-atom interactions. The trial wave function has a simple structure, combining two- and three-body correlation functions coming from a translationally invariant configuration-interaction description, superimposed to a Jastrow-type correlated wave function with backflow. We find that the smallest bound drop has N = 35 atoms, and that for each N the minimum energy states have the highest spin values.

Wave functions of helium clusters

M V Rama

Abstract This paper describes improved trial wavefunctions for helium clusters and their use in variational QMC calculations of their binding energies, structural properties, and breathing mode vibrational excited states, for clusters of 3 to 270 atoms. The wavefunctions developed were similar to those of earlier work but included convenient analytic functions for two- and three-body correlations. All terms were of the Jastrow exponential form, based on sums of one-, two-, and three-body terms t1(ri), t2(rij), and t3(rij, rjk, rki), expressed as functions of interparticle distances. Excited-state wavefunctions for the breathing vibrational mode were obtained with the aid of procedures adapted from treatment of the quantum mechanics of liquid drop models. The interactions of helium atoms were specified as pairwise-additive with an accurate semi-empirical pair potential. Optimizations of parameters in the trial wavefunctions were carried out for individual cluster sizes with an exhaustive search procedure in a series of trial variational calculations, in which the parameters were varied to minimize the energy. A partial correlation of results was obtained by use of identical initial coordinates and random number seeds in these optimization calculations. Once the wavefunctions were optimized, longer calculations were used to determine properties of the clusters. In addition, diffusion QMC calculations were used to obtain more accurate nonvariational energies for comparisons.

The spectra of mixed He3–He4 droplets

Stefano Fantoni, R. Guardiola, Jesús Navarro +1 more

The diffusion Monte Carlo technique is used to calculate and analyze the excitation spectrum of 3He atoms bound to a cluster of 4He atoms by using a previously determined optimum filling of single-fermion orbits with well-defined orbital angular momentum L, spin S, and parity quantum numbers. The study concentrates on the energies and shapes of the three kinds of states for which the fermionic part of the wave function is a single Slater determinant: maximum L or maximum S states within a given orbit, and fully polarized clusters. The picture that emerges is that of systems with strong shell effects, whose binding and excitation energies are essentially determined by averages over configuration at fixed number of particles and spin, i.e., by the monopole properties of an effective Hamiltonian.

Variational Jastrow coupled-cluster theory of quantum many-body systems

Yang Xian

We study many-body correlations in the ground state of a general quantum system of bosons or fermions by including an additional Jastrow function in our recently proposed variational coupled-cluster method. Our approach combines the advantages of state-dependent correlations in the coupled-cluster theory and of the strong, short-ranged correlations of the Jastrow function. We apply a generalized linked-cluster expansion for the Jastrow wave function and provide a detailed analysis for practical evaluation of the Hamiltonian expectation value as an energy functional of the Jastrow function and the bare density-distribution functions introduced and calculated in our earlier publications; a simple, first-order energy functional is derived and detailed formulas for the higher-order contributions are provided. Our energy functional does not suffer the divergence as most coupled-cluster calculations often do when applying to Hamiltonians with hardcore potentials. We also discuss possible applications of our technique, including applications to strongly correlated fermion systems.

Dynamics of He4 droplets

E. Krotscheck, Robert E. Zillich

Optimized variational calculations have been carried out for clusters of He4 between N=20 and N=1000 atoms. For small cluster sizes with less or equal to 112 particles, where comparisons with existing diffusion Monte Carlo results are possible, we find good agreement for the ground state energies and densities. Using a somewhat simpler approximation, we also calculate the bound state energies of He3 atoms attached to these clusters. We then calculate excitations and the dynamic structure function. The complex and nonlocal self-energy introduced for that purpose gives access to the calculation of both elastic and inelastic scattering processes for He4 and He3 atoms impinging on the clusters.

Coordinated wave function for the ground state of liquid He4

Y. Lutsyshyn

We present a variational ansatz for the ground state of a strongly correlated Bose system. This ansatz goes beyond the Jastrow-Feenberg functional form and explicitly enforces coordination shells in the structure of the wave function. We apply this ansatz to liquid helium-4 with a simple three-variable parametrization of the pair functions. The optimized wave function is found to give an excellent description of the mid-range correlations in the fluid. We also demonstrate the possibility to use this ansatz to study inhomogeneous systems. The phase separation and free surface emerge naturally in this wave function, even though it is constructed of short-range two-body functions and does not contain one-body terms. Because no explicit description of the surface is necessary, this provides a powerful description tool for cluster states.
