Abstract

Recent experiments performed with fermionic /sup 6/Li and /sup 40/K atoms, which possess both Feshbach resonances at convenient magnetic fields are discussed. When /sup 40/K is mixed with a Bose-Einstein condensate of /sup 87/Rb, for sufficient atom numbers of both species, a collapse of the Fermi gas is observed. This is the result of the strong interspecies attractive interaction which overcomes the Fermi pressure in the quantum degenerate regime. As for the case of phonon-induced interaction between electrons in superconductors, it is predicted that the boson-fermion attractive interaction favors Cooper pairing of fermions when prepared in a mixture of two states.

Observation of a Degenerate Fermi Gas Trapped by a Bose-Einstein Condensate

B. J. DeSalvo, Krutik Patel, Jacob Johansen +1 more

We report on the formation of a stable quantum degenerate mixture of fermionic ^{6}Li and bosonic ^{133}Cs in an optical trap by sympathetic cooling near an interspecies Feshbach resonance. New regimes of quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixtures are identified. With moderate attractive interspecies interactions, we show that a degenerate Fermi gas of Li can be fully confined in a Cs Bose-Einstein condensate without external potentials. For stronger attraction where mean-field collapse is expected, no such instability is observed. Potential mechanisms to explain this phenomenon are discussed.

Collapse of a Degenerate Fermi Gas

Giovanni Carlo Modugno, G. Roati, Francesco Riboli +3 more

A degenerate gas of identical fermions is brought to collapse by the interaction with a Bose-Einstein condensate. We used an atomic mixture of fermionic potassium-40 and bosonic rubidium-87, in which the strong interspecies attraction leads to an instability above a critical number of particles. The observed phenomenon suggests a direction for manipulating fermion-fermion interactions on the route to superfluidity.

Signatures of superfluidity in atomic Fermi gases

Mirta Rodríquez Pinilla

After the experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, experimentalists started to trap the fermionic isotopes. The degenerate state for fermions was reported in 1999. The main objective of these experiments is to obtain superfluidity of fermionic gases. When there are attractive interactions between the fermions, the Fermi sea becomes unstable with respect to the formation of atomic Cooper pairs and the system becomes a superfluid. It turns out that the existing experimental cooling techniques allow minimum temperatures for fermions of the order of the Fermi temperature. Using Feshbach resonances induced by magnetic fields enhances the effective interactions between the atoms leading to superfluid transition temperatures of the order of the Fermi energy. This is a completely new regime of fermionic superfluidity far from the BCS superconductors, He and even high- superconductors. The achievement of superfluidity on gases

Sound Propagation in a Bose-Fermi Mixture: From Weak to Strong Interactions

Krutik Patel, Geyue Cai, Henry Ando +1 more

Particlelike excitations, or quasiparticles, emerging from interacting fermionic and bosonic quantum fields underlie many intriguing quantum phenomena in high energy and condensed matter systems. Computation of the properties of these excitations is frequently intractable in the strong interaction regime. Quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixtures offer promising prospects to elucidate the physics of such quasiparticles. In this work, we investigate phonon propagation in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate immersed in a degenerate Fermi gas with interspecies scattering length a_{BF} tuned by a Feshbach resonance. We observe sound mode softening with moderate attractive interactions. For even greater attraction, surprisingly, stable sound propagation reemerges and persists across the resonance. The stability of phonons with resonant interactions opens up opportunities to investigate novel Bose-Fermi liquids and fermionic pairing in the strong interaction regime.

Fermionic quantum mixtures with tunable interactions

Rudolf Grimm, Cosetta Baroni

The topic of the present lecture notes are two-species quantum mixtures composed of a deeply degenerate Fermi gas and a second component, the latter being fermionic or bosonic. A key ingredient is the possibility to tune the $s$-wave interaction between the different species by means of magnetically controlled Feshbach resonances, which allow us to investigate regimes of strong interactions. In two case studies, we review our experiments on mixtures of $^6$Li fermions with fermionic $^{40}$K or bosonic $^{41}$K atoms and on mixtures of fermionic $^{161}$Dy with $^{40}$K atoms. We cover various topics of fermionic quantum many-body physics, ranging from impurity physics and quasiparticles over phase separation to the formation of ultracold molecules and progress towards novel superfluids.

Molecular BEC and the crossover to a fermionic superfluid

M. Bartenstein, A. Altmeyer, S. Riedl +5 more

The paper gives an overview of the recent developments in the field of ultracold fermionic quantum gases. In particular, results obtained on an ultracold spin-mixture of /sup 6/Li atoms in a series of experiments performed in Innsbruck is presented . Bose-Einstein condensation of strongly bound atom pairs (molecules) , the reversible crossover to a degenerate Fermi gas, measurements of collective excitation modes, and spectroscopic observation of pairing in a strongly interacting Fermi gas of atoms are also discussed. The experimental results provide strong evidence for superfluidity.
