Entropy of Hermite polynomials with application to the harmonic oscillator

Abstract

We analyse the entropy of Hermite polynomials and orthogonal polynomials for the Freud weights w(x)=exp(-|x|^m) on the real line and show how these entropies are related to information entropy of the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator. The physical interest in such entropies comes from a stronger version of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, due to Bialynicki-Birula and Mycielski, which is expressed as a lower bound for the sum of the information entropies of a quantum-mechanical system in the position space and in the momentum space.

Information entropy of conditionally exactly solvable potentials

D. Dutta, P. Roy

We evaluate Shannon entropy for the position and momentum eigenstates of some conditionally exactly solvable potentials which are isospectral to harmonic oscillator and whose solutions are given in terms of exceptional orthogonal polynomials. The Bialynicki–Birula–Mycielski inequality has also been tested for a number of states.

Logarithmic potential of Hermite polynomials and information entropies of the harmonic oscillator eigenstates

Jorge Sánchez-Ruiz

The problem of calculating the information entropy in both position and momentum spaces for the nth stationary state of the one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator reduces to the evaluation of the logarithmic potential Vn(t)=−∫−∞∞(Hn(x))2 ln |x−t|e−x2 dx at the zeros of the Hermite polynomial Hn(x). Here, a closed analytical expression for Vn(t) is obtained, which in turn yields an exact analytical expression for the entropies when the exact location of the zeros of Hn(x) is known. An inequality for the values of Vn(t) at the zeros of Hn(x) is conjectured, which leads to a new, nonvariational, upper bound for the entropies. Finally, the exact formula for Vn(t) is written in an alternative way, which allows the entropies to be expressed in terms of the even-order spectral moments of the Hermite polynomials. The asymptotic (n≫1) limit of this alternative expression for the entropies is discussed, and the conjectured upper bound for the entropies is proved to be asymptotically valid.

Quantum Information Entropies for the Morse Potential

Ekrem Aydıner, Cenk Orta, R. Sever

Quantum information entropies for the one dimensional Morse potential are discussed in position and momentum space. These entropies for different strengths of the potential well are numerically obtained. Interesting features of the entropy densities are also graphically demonstrated and it is shown that the position and momentum space information entropies satisfy the bound which is obtained by Beckner, Bialynicki-Birula, and Mycielski.

Position and momentum information entropies of the D -dimensional harmonic oscillator and hydrogen atom

Rafael J. Yáñez, Walter Van Assche, J. S. Dehesa

The position- and momentum-space entropies of the isotropic harmonic oscillator and the hydrogen atom in D dimensions are shown to be related to some entropy integrals which involve classical orthogonal polynomials. These integrals are exactly calculated for Chebyshev polynomials and only in an approximate way for Gegenbauer polynomials. The physical entropies are explicitly obtained in the ground state and in a few low-lying excited states. Finally, the dimensionality dependence of the ground-state entropies of the two above-mentioned quantum-mechanical systems is analyzed (numerically) and the values of the entropies in a large class of excited states of the D-dimensional (D=1,2,3) harmonic oscillator and hydrogen atom are tabulated and discussed.

On the quantum information entropies and squeezing associated with the eigenstates of the isotonic oscillator

A Ghasemi, M. R. Hooshmandasl, Mohammad Kazem Tavassoly

In this paper we calculate the position and momentum space information entropies for the quantum states associated with a particular physical system, i.e. the isotonic oscillator Hamiltonian. We present our results for its ground states, as well as for its excited states. We observe that the lower bound of the sum of the position and momentum entropies expressed by the Beckner, Bialynicki-Birula and Mycielski (BBM) inequality is satisfied. Moreover, there exist eigenstates that exhibit squeezing in the position information entropy. In fact, entropy squeezing, which occurs in position, will be compensated for by an increase in momentum entropy, such that the BBM inequality is guaranteed. To complete our study we investigate the amplitude squeezing in $x$ and $p$-quadratures corresponding to the eigenstates of the isotonic oscillator and show that amplitude squeezing, again in $x$, will be revealed as expected, while the Heisenberg uncertainty relationship is also satisfied. Finally, our numerical calculations of the entropy densities will be presented graphically.

Entropic Analysis of the Quantum Oscillator with a Minimal Length

David Puertas‐Centeno, M. Portesi

The well-known Heisenberg–Robertson uncertainty relation for a pair of noncommuting observables, is expressed in terms of the product of variances and the commutator among the operators, computed for the quantum state of a system. Different modified commutation relations have been considered in the last years with the purpose of taking into account the effect of quantum gravity. Indeed it can be seen that letting [ X , P ] = i ℏ ( 1 + β P 2 ) implies the existence of a minimal length proportional to β . The Bialynicki-Birula–Mycielski entropic uncertainty relation in terms of Shannon entropies is also seen to be deformed in the presence of a minimal length, corresponding to a strictly positive deformation parameter β . Generalized entropies can be implemented. Indeed, results for the sum of position and (auxiliary) momentum Rényi entropies with conjugated indices have been provided recently for the ground and first excited state. We present numerical findings for conjugated pairs of entropic indices, for the lowest lying levels of the deformed harmonic oscillator system in 1D, taking into account the position distribution for the wavefunction and the actual momentum.
