Coherent population trapping in an rf-optical double resonance experiment in a neon discharge

We observed radio-frequency (rf) induced transparency for a probe optical field in an rf-optical double resonance experiment in a neon discharge. The origin of the transparency is coherent population trapping at Zeeman sublevels of the lower level of an optical transition of neon. Stokes and anti-Stokes optical fields were generated due to stimulated Raman scattering of both the radio-frequency field on the probe-induced optical coherence and the probe field on the Zeeman coherence.

Frequency locking: A distinctive feature of the coherent population trapping

Eugene A. Tsygankov, Dmitry S. Chuchelov, Maria I. Vaskovskaya +3 more

We investigate the use of phase modulation to generate an error signal for frequency stabilization to a reference atomic transition. The study focuses on the high-frequency modulation regime. Our theoretical analysis shows that, in the case of coherent population trapping, the maximal slope of the error signal remains constant as the modulation frequency increases, whereas it steadily decreases for other types of resonances. Experimental results with 87Rb atoms confirm this behavior under comparison with the double radio-optical resonance.

Raman–Ramsey pulsed excitation of coherent population trapping resonances in a 87Rb cell with a buffer gas

V. N. Baryshev, G. V. Osipenko, M. S. Aleinikov +1 more

We report the results of experimental investigation of the Raman – Ramsey method of pulsed excitation of coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances in a rubidium vapour cell filled with a mixture of Ar and Ne buffer gases. For the development of compact quantum microwave frequency standards, this method is an alternative to the pulsed optical pumping method recently implemented using the same rubidium cell. Both methods have advantages over the traditional double radio-optical resonance technique, the main of which is the substantial suppression of the light shift of the clock transition frequency, since the evolution of the coherence of atomic states forming the clock transition occurs in the absence of laser radiation in the cell. The narrow (110 – 240 Hz) Raman – Ramsey resonances are obtained using the scheme of pulsed excitation of CPT resonances on the D 1 lines of the 87 Rb atom with the same linear (lin||lin) polarisations of the bichromatic laser radiation components. The process of optimising the central fringe linewidth, its contrast, and the linewidth-to-contrast ratio is described. The magnetic dependence of the Raman – Ramsey line central fringe linewidth is experimentally investigated.
