Abstract

We study the entropy of a quantized field in interaction with a two-level atom (in a pure state) when the field is initially in a mixture of two number states. We then generalise the result for a thermal state; i.e., an (infinite) statistical mixture of number states. We show that for some specific interaction times, the atom passes its purity to the field and therefore the field entropy decreases from its initial value.

Statistical Mixture of Kaleidoscope States Interacting with a Two-Level Atom: Entropy and Purification

Jorge Andres Anaya-Contreras, Arturo Zúñiga-Segundo, H. M. Moya-Cessa

We investigate some of the fundamental features of the interaction of a mixture of coherent states, namely, a Kaleidoscope states mixture, with two-level atoms in the Jaynes–Cummings model framework. We begin our analysis by calculating the von Neumann entropy of the field, which is determined with the help of the virtual atom method. The oscillations appearing in the entropy indicate a state of purity greater than the initial state, i.e., a purification of the initial state due to a transfer of coherence from the atom to the field. In this oscillatory region, we obtain a negative Wigner function that hints at a (noisy) multiple Schrödinger cat.

Entropy Evolution of the Bimodal Field Interacting with an Effective Two-level Atom Via the Raman Transition

Mao Fa Fang

The properties of entropy evolution of the bimodal field interacting with an effective two-level atom via the Raman transition are studied. The influences of the initial average photon number and of the atomic coherence on the evolution of the bimodal field entropy are examined. It is shown that the bimodal field is in a pure state only under certain conditions in the early stages of time evolution and later tends to a statistical mixture state with maximum entropy values; the bimodal field remains strongly entangled with the atom.

Entropy for the quantized field in the atom-field interaction: Initial mixed field

We study the atom-field interaction when the field is in a mixture of coherent states. We show that in this case it is possible to calculate analytically the field entropy for times of the order of twice the collapse time. Such analytical results are done with the help of numerical analysis.

Entanglement and causality in the interaction of the two-level atom with the field

Evgeniy O. Kiktenko, Sergey M. Korotaev

The interaction between an initially pure two-level atom and the mixed thermal quantized field mode in the framework of the Jaynes?Cummings model is considered with the employment of quantum causal analysis . At the high temperature of the field, a distinction between the resulting properties of initially excited and ground atom states smoothes over and the whole state turns out to be causally asymmetric, entangled and ?classical? in the entropic sense. The average asymptotic entanglement is found. It is revealed that the thermalization acting on the field corresponds to the stronger causality and entanglement decay, rather than the thermalization acting only on the atom.

Preparation of a pure atomic state

Miguel Orszag, J. C. Retamal, C. Saavedra

We study the resonant interaction of a two-level atom with one mode of the electromagnetic field. We calculate the entropy associated with the atomic state evolving from arbitrary initial conditions. We show that pure atomic states can be generated from an arbitrary initial mixed atomic state. Also, we observe and discuss a significant difference in the long-time behavior of the entropy for an initial number state and a coherent state.

Atom-field transfer of coherence in a two-photon micromaser assisted by a classical field. (arXiv:quant-ph/0408054v2 CROSS LISTED)

A. F. Gomes, A. Vidiella-Barranco

We investigate the transfer of coherence from atoms to a cavity field initially in a statistical mixture in a two-photon micromaser arrangement. The field is progressively modified from a maximum entropy state (thermal state) towards an almost pure state (entropy close to zero) due to its interaction with atoms sent across the cavity. We trace over the atomic variables, i.e., the atomic states are not collapsed by a detector after they leave the cavity. We find that by applying an external classical driving field it is possible to substantially increase the field purity without the need of previously preparing the atoms in a superposition of their energy eigenstates. We also discuss some of the nonclassical features of the resulting field.
