Inhomogeneous spin diffusion of transversely polarized fermions at a high temperature limit

Abstract

We study the transverse spin dynamics of trapped polarized Fermi gases in the high temperature limit. In the non-interacting collisionless regime, a magnetic field gradient induces collective spin wave oscillations. In the strongly interacting collisional regime, the dynamics are governed by spin diffusion. These two limits have been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically, but the crossover between them has received less attention. In this paper, we use a quantum Boltzmann equation to study transverse spin dynamics and show how the excitations evolve from dispersive to diffusive in the high temperature limit. We provide analytical solutions in the two limiting regimes, which agree well with our numerical results.

Transverse Demagnetization Dynamics of a Unitary Fermi Gas

Alma Bardon, Scott Beattie, C. Luciuk +8 more

Understanding the quantum dynamics of strongly interacting fermions is a problem relevant to diverse forms of matter, including high-temperature superconductors, neutron stars, and quark-gluon plasma. An appealing benchmark is offered by cold atomic gases in the unitary limit of strong interactions. Here, we study the dynamics of a transversely magnetized unitary Fermi gas in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. We observe the demagnetization of the gas, caused by diffusive spin transport. At low temperatures, the diffusion constant saturates to the conjectured quantum-mechanical lower bound ≃ ħ/m, where m is the particle mass. The development of pair correlations, indicating the transformation of the initially noninteracting gas toward a unitary spin mixture, is observed by measuring Tan's contact parameter.

Transverse spin diffusion in strongly interacting Fermi gases

Tilman Enss

We compute spin diffusion in a dilute Fermi gas at arbitrary temperature, polarization, and strong interaction in the normal phase using kinetic theory. While the longitudinal spin diffusivity ${D}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}$ depends weakly on polarization and diverges for small temperatures, the transverse spin diffusivity ${D}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ has a strong polarization dependence and approaches a finite value for $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ in the Fermi liquid phase. For a 3D unitary Fermi gas at infinite scattering length, the diffusivities reach a minimum near the quantum limit of diffusion $\ensuremath{\hbar}/m$ in the quantum degenerate regime and are strongly suppressed by medium scattering, and we discuss the importance of the spin-rotation effect. In two dimensions, ${D}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ attains a minimum at strong coupling $\ensuremath{-}1\ensuremath{\lesssim}\mathrm{ln}({k}_{F}{a}_{2D})\ensuremath{\lesssim}1$ and reaches ${D}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\sim}0.2...\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}0.3\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\hbar}/m$ at large polarization. These values are consistent with recent measurements of two-dimensional ultracold atomic gases in the strong coupling regime.

Anisotropic Spin Diffusion in Trapped Boltzmann Gases

William J. Mullin, Robert J. Ragan

Recent experiments in a mixture of two hyperfine states of trapped Bose gases show behavior analogous to a spin-1/2 system, including transverse spin waves and other familiar Leggett-Rice-type effects. We have derived the kinetic equations applicable to these systems, including the spin dependence of interparticle interactions in the collision integral, and have solved for spin-wave frequencies and longitudinal and transverse diffusion constants in the Boltzmann limit. We find that, while the transverse and longitudinal collision times for trapped Fermi gases are identical, the Bose gas shows diffusion anisotropy. Moreover, the lack of spin isotropy in the interactions leads to the non-conservation of transverse spin, which in turn has novel effects on the hydrodynamic modes. Collisionless spin dynamics in a magnetic field gradient

Junjun Xu, Qiang Gu, Erich J. Mueller

We study the collisionless spin dynamics of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas in a magnetic field gradient. In the absence of interactions, the system evolution is periodic: the magnetization develops twists, which evolve into a longitudinal polarization. Recurrences follow. For weak interaction, the exchange interactions lead to beats in these oscillations. We present an array of analytic and numerical techniques for studying this physics.

Spectrum of spin waves in cold polarized gases

T. L. Andreeva

The spin dynamics of cold polarized gases are investigated using the Boltzmann equation. The dispersion relation for spin waves (transverse component of the magnetic moment) and the spin diffusion coefficient of the longitudinal component of the magnetic moment are calculated without using fitting parameters. The spin wave frequency and the diffusion coefficient for rubidium atoms are estimated numerically.
