Local electronic nematicity in the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model

Kun Fang, Gayanath Fernando, ARMEN N. KOCHARIAN

Nematicity is a well-known property of liquid crystals and has been recently discussed in the context of strongly interacting electrons. An electronic nematic phase has been seen in many experiments in certain strongly correlated materials, in particular, in the pseudogap phase generic to many hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Recent measurements in high Tc superconductors have shown that even if the lattice is perfectly rotationally symmetric, the ground state can still have strongly nematic local properties. Our study of the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model provides strong support for the recent experimental results on local rotational C4 symmetry breaking. The variational cluster approach is used here to show the possibility of an electronic nematic state and the proximity of the underlying symmetry-breaking ground state within the Hubbard model. We identify this nematic phase in the overdoped region and show that the local nematicity decreases with increasing electron filling. Our results also indicate that strong Coulomb interaction may drive the nematic phase into a phase similar to the stripe structure. The calculated spin (magnetic) correlation function in momentum space shows the effects resulting from real-space nematicity.

Orbital selective order and Z3 Potts nematicity from a non-Fermi liquid

YuZheng Xie, Andrew Hardy, Arun Paramekanti

Electronic liquid crystals are ubiquitous in strongly correlated matter, and often seen in multiorbital materials exhibiting non-Fermi-liquid transport. The authors propose here and analyze a three-orbital Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model that hosts a uniform solution corresponding to a \ensuremath{\mathbb{Z}}${}_{3}$ Potts nematic. In the atomic limit, this model displays an orbital-selective non-Fermi liquid down to $T$=0. On the triangular and cubic lattice, this evolves into a nematic with highly anisotropic transport, reminiscent of dynamical mean field theory studies of multiorbital Hubbard models.

Nematic phase transition in a multi-orbital Hubbard model

Giuseppe Guarnaccia, Canio Noce

By using the reflection positivity method, we rigorously establish some exact properties of a multi-orbital Hubbard model, here adopted to describe a nematic orbital phase transition. We show that, when the on-site intra-orbital Coulomb interaction is equal to the on-site inter-orbital Coulomb interaction, this model supports a staggered nematic orbital order if repulsive or attractive on-site inter-orbital and intra-orbital interactions and off-site repulsive inter-orbital interaction are considered. Depending on the dimensions of the bipartite lattice where the model is defined, we find that, at half-filling, the order may or may not exist. In particular, we prove that the order may exist, in two and three dimensions, at sufficiently low temperatures if the hopping amplitude is small enough.
