Activated and non-activated dephasing in a spin bath

Abstract

We analyze different decoherence processes in a system coupled to a bath. Apart from the well known standard dephasing mechanism which is temperature dependent an alternative mechanism is presented, the spin-swap dephasing which does not need initial bath activation and is temperature independent. We show that for dipole interaction in the weak coupling regime the separation of time scales between system and bath can not produce pure dephasing, the process being accompanied by dissipation. Activated and non-activated dephasing processes are analyzed in a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center.

Understanding Central Spin Decoherence Due to Interacting Dissipative Spin Baths

Mykyta Onizhuk, Yuxin Wang, Jonah Nagura +2 more

We propose a new approach to simulate the decoherence of a central spin coupled to an interacting dissipative spin bath with cluster-correlation expansion techniques. We benchmark the approach on generic 1D and 2D spin baths and find excellent agreement with numerically exact simulations. Our calculations show a complex interplay between dissipation and coherent spin exchange, leading to increased central spin coherence in the presence of fast dissipation. Finally, we model near-surface nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond and show that accounting for bath dissipation is crucial to understanding their decoherence. Our method can be applied to a variety of systems and provides a powerful tool to investigate spin dynamics in dissipative environments.

Spin decoherence and electron spin bath noise of a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond

Zhi‐Hui Wang, Susumu Takahashi

We theoretically investigate spin decoherence of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. Using the spin coherent-state $P$-representation method, we simulate coherence evolution of the NV center coupled to surrounding nitrogen electron (N) spins. In the system, the strength of N-N coupling is the same order as that of NV-N coupling (the strong intrabath coupling regime). We find that spin decoherence time as well as free-induction decay of the NV center depend on the spatial configuration of N spins. Both the spin decoherence rate ($1/{T}_{2}$) and dephasing rate ($1/{T}_{2}^{*})$ of the NV center increase linearly with the concentration of the N spins. Using the $P$-representation method, we also demonstrate extracting the noise spectrum of the N spin bath. The capability to calculate the noise spectrum will provide promising pathways to suppress decoherence of spin systems in the strong intrabath coupling regime.

Decoherence induced by interacting quantum spin baths

Davide Rossini, Tommaso Calarco, Vittorio Giovannetti +2 more

We study decoherence induced on a two-level system coupled to a one-dimensional quantum spin chain. We consider the cases where the dynamics of the chain is determined by the Ising, $XY$, or Heisenberg exchange Hamiltonian. This model of quantum baths can be of fundamental importance for the understanding of decoherence in open quantum systems, since it can be experimentally engineered by using atoms in optical lattices. As an example, here we show how to implement a pure dephasing model for a qubit system coupled to an interacting spin bath. We provide results that go beyond the case of a central spin coupled uniformly to all the spins of the bath, in particular showing what happens when the bath enters different phases, or becomes critical; we also study the dependence of the coherence loss on the number of bath spins to which the system is coupled and we describe a coupling-independent regime in which decoherence exhibits universal features, irrespective of the system-environment coupling strength. Finally, we establish a relation between decoherence and entanglement inside the bath. For the Ising and the $XY$ models we are able to give an exact expression for the decay of coherences, while for the Heisenberg bath we resort to the numerical time-dependent density matrix renormalization group.

Decoherence and dynamical decoupling control of nitrogen vacancy center electron spins in nuclear spin baths

Nan Zhao, Sai-Wah Ho, Ren‐Bao Liu

We theoretically study the decoherence and the dynamical decoupling control of nitrogen vacancy center electron spins in high-purity diamond, where the hyperfine interaction with ${}^{13}$C nuclear spins is the dominating decoherence mechanism. The decoherence is formulated as the entanglement between the electron spin and the nuclear spins, which is induced by nuclear spin bath evolution conditioned on the electron spin state. The nuclear spin bath evolution is driven by elementary processes such as single spin precession and pairwise flip flops. The importance of different elementary processes in the decoherence depends on the strength of the external magnetic field.

Decoherence in the Pure Dephasing Spin-Boson Model with Hermitian or Non-Hermitian Bath

Ying Wu, Ning-Hua Tong

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the decoherence of qubit due to its coupling to a Hermitian or a non-Hermitian environment within the pure dephasing spin-boson model. Using this model, we analytically establish the previously anticipated similarity between the non-equilibrium and the equilibrium correlation functions $P_x(t)$ and $C_x(t)$. We find that integer values of $A$ (coupling strength) or $s$ (bath exponent) has distinctive long time asymptotic behaviors of $P_x(t)$ and $C_x(t)$ from those of the non-integer values, accompanied with a diverging crossover time scale. We also find that the non-Hermitian environment tends to suppress the decoherence of qubit for all values of $A$ and $s$, in contrast to the conclusion of Dey et al . [Phys. Lett. A 383, 125931 (2019)]. Our results show the potential of the non-Hermitian environmental engineering for suppressing the decoherence of qubit.

We theoretically investigate spin decoherence of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. Using the spin coherent-state PPP-representation method, we simulate coherence evolution of the NV center coupled to surrounding nitrogen electron (N) spins. In the system, the strength of N-N coupling is the same order as that of NV-N coupling (the strong intrabath coupling regime). We find that spin decoherence time as well as free-induction decay of the NV center depend on the spatial configuration of N spins. Both the spin decoherence rate (1/T21/{T}_{2}1/T2) and dephasing rate (1/T2∗)1/{T}_{2}^{*})1/T2∗) of the NV center increase linearly with the concentration of the N spins. Using the PPP-representation method, we also demonstrate extracting the noise spectrum of the N spin bath. The capability to calculate the noise spectrum will provide promising pathways to suppress decoherence of spin systems in the strong intrabath coupling regime.
