Generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs in a planar waveguide

Divya Bharadwaj, Krishnan Thyagarajan

In this paper, we show that the polarization-entangled photon pairs can be generated using spontaneous parametric down conversion in a dual periodically poled planar waveguide. The proposed configuration is shown to have efficiencies higher than in the case of bulk crystals with the possibility of ease of collection, like in channel waveguides, with the additional feature of wavelength tunability. We also show that the planar waveguide configuration permits the generation of hyperentanglement in polarization and path degree of freedom, which is not possible in case of channel waveguide. The proposed design should find applications in quantum information processing using integrated quantum optics.

Polarization-entangled photon pairs from a periodically poled crystalline waveguide

Zachary H. Levine, Jingyun Fan, Jun Chen +1 more

A proposal is made for the generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs from a periodically poled crystal allowing for high collection efficiency, high entanglement, and stable operation. The theory is formulated for colinear propagation for application to waveguides. The key feature of the theory is the use of type II phase matching using both the +1 and -1 diffraction orders of the poling structure. Although these conditions are fairly restrictive in terms of operating parameters, practical operating conditions can be found. For example, we find that a HeNe pump laser may be used for a periodically poled rubidium-doped potassium titanyl phosphate (Rb:KTP) waveguide to yield single mode polarization-entangled pairs. Fidelities of 0.98 are possible under practical conditions.

The generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs using periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides in a fibre loop

Yun-Kun Jiang, Akihisa Tomita

We report the generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs at a telecom band using two cascade periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides in a fibre loop. The phase of an entangled photon state was stabilized automatically in our setup. The average visibility was about 93.5 ± 2.6% for the entangled photon pairs after subtracting accidental coincidences in our measurement.

WDM polarization-entanglement by cascaded optical nonlinearities in a PPLN waveguide

Shin Arahira, Hitoshi Murai

We report generation of wavelength-multiplexed polarization-entangled photon-pairs by cascaded optical nonlinearities (sum-frequency-generation and parametric down conversion) in a periodically-poled LiNbO3waveguide device. The visibilities higher than 98% were achieved for all the evaluated wavelength channels.

We report the generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs at all telecom band using two PPLN waveguides in a fiber loop. The visibility is about 92% in our measurement. Phase is stable for the entangled state.

Generation of non-degenerated polarization entangled photon pairs in periodically poled Ti:LiNbO3 waveguides with interlaced domains

Abu Thomas, Harald Herrmann, W. Sohler

Entangled photon pair sources are of key importance in the emerging field of quantum information technology. A common method to generate entangled pairs is based on type II phase-matched spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) followed by a spatial separation of the pair using a conventional beam splitter (see e.g.). This scheme can be used to generate entangled pairs at degeneracy with the drawback that half of the generated pairs are “lost” if both photons leave the beam splitter at the same output port. Recently, we have demonstrated a new scheme providing non-degenerated pairs by employing a sophisticated poling pattern. In this contribution we report a source of non-degenerated polarization entangled photon pairs using such a PPLN waveguide together with a polarization maintaining fiber as quantum eraser and a commercially available fiber-based coarse WDM coupler.
