Ternary max-min algebra for representation of reversible logic functions

Abstract

Ternary reversible logic functions are generally represented as ternary Galois field sum of products (TGFSOP) expressions and the TGFSOP expressions are mapped to reversible circuits using cascades of Feynman and Toffoli gates. Although a ternary logic function with a large number of variables can be minimized as a TGFSOP expression, the process is computationally expensive and the resulting reversible circuit tends to have a high quantum cost and ancilla inputs. To overcome these limitations, in this work we propose a new method of representing ternary reversible logic functions as Max of Min-terms (Max-Min) expressions, which can be mapped to a reversible circuit using multiple-controlled unary gates requiring lower quantum cost and fewer ancilla inputs. We propose a map-based minimization method for Max-Min expressions of up to four variables focusing on restrictions of the reversible circuit mapping technique.

Synthesis of reversible logic functions using ternary Max-Min algebra

Musharrat Khan, Jacqueline E. Rice

Ternary reversible circuits are normally realized as Toffoli cascades using ternary Galois field sum of products (TGFSOP) expressions. In this work we propose a new method for realization of ternary reversible circuits using ternary Max-Min expressions. The proposed method uses ternary multiple-controlled unary gates to map Max-Min expression into reversible circuit. We also present techniques for realizations of multiple-controlled unary gates using M-S gates at the quantum level. Preliminary results show that the proposed method produces better results than TGFSOP-based method in terms of both quantum cost and ancilla inputs.

An Improved Ternary Logic Synthesis Approach Using Ternary Max-Min Algebra

P. Mercy Nesa Rani, Leniency Marbaniang, Majid Haghparast +1 more

Abstract Quantum computation which relies on exploiting quantum mechanical phenomena, has received significant attention in recent years. Higher dimensional quantum systems increase the density of encoded information per computing element (e.g. qutrit for the 3-level system), resulting in less resource overhead. Recently, there have been several works in the synthesis of ternary reversible functions, most of which are not scalable. Therefore, this study proposes a scalable approach for the synthesis of ternary logic functions using Max-Min algebra. In this approach, from a ternary truth table, Max-Min expressions are first generated with the help of ternary Max-Min algebra. Then, the expressions are minimized using Boolean simplification rules. After that, the minimized expressions are mapped to ternary reversible gates. We have also proposed a decomposition structure to map the ternary reversible gates into ternary elementary gates. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed synthesis approach is more scalable as compared to existing synthesis approaches. SAT-based Exact Synthesis of Ternary Reversible Circuits using a Functionally Complete Gate Library

Abhoy Kole, Kamalika Datta, Indranil Sengupta +1 more

The problem of synthesis and optimization of reversible and quantum circuits have drawn the attention of researchers for the last two decades due to increasing interest in quantum computing. Although lot of works have been done on the synthesis of binary reversible circuits, very less works have been reported on the synthesis of ternary reversible circuits. Ternary circuits have lower cost of implementation as compared to their binary counterparts. However, the synthesis approaches that exist for ternary reversible circuits either use too many circuit lines (qutrits) or too many gates. Only one prior work has discussed the problem of generating cost-optimal ternary reversible circuits, but for a very restrictive gate library, which limits the approach to a specific subset of ternary reversible functions and often the solution becomes sub-optimal due to the imposed restrictions. The present paper overcomes that restriction, and uses multiple control ternary Toffoli gates with all possible ternary target operations as the gate library. This gate library is functionally complete and can be used to synthesize any arbitrary function. The proposed SAT-based synthesis approach provides low cost solutions in terms of the number of gates for any arbitrary ternary reversible function. Experimental results on various randomly generated permutations as well as standard ternary benchmarks establish this claim. The results can be used as template for other synthesis approaches by observing how far they deviate from the optimal solutions.

Exact Synthesis of Ternary Reversible Functions Using Ternary Toffoli Gates

Abhoy Kole, P. Mercy Nesa Rani, Kamalika Datta +2 more

Realization of logic functions using ternary reversible logic is known to requirelesser number of lines as compared to conventionalbinary reversible logic. This aspect of ternary reversible logic has motivated researchers to explore various synthesis approaches in the past. Existing synthesis methods require additional lines (called ancilla lines)for synthesis, which is expensive from the quantum implementation pointof view. There is no reported work for ternary reversible logic synthesisthat require the minimum possible number of gates and also lines. Thisclass of synthesis methods is called exact synthesis. In this paper two exact synthesis methods for ternary reversible logic have been proposed for the first time, one based on booleansatisfiability (SAT) and the other based on level-constrained heuristic search technique. A permutation representing a reversible ternary truth table is given as input, and a reversible circuit consisting ofgeneralized ternary Toffoli gates that implements the permutationis obtained as output. Experimental studies have been carried out on various randomly generatedternary reversible functions.

An efficient synthesis method for ternary reversible logic

Saikat Basu, Sudhindu Bikash Mandal, Amlan Chakrabarti +2 more

While the role of ternary reversible and quantum computation has been growing, synthesis methodologies for such logic, have been addressed in only a few works. A reversible ternary logic function can be expressed as minterms by using projection operators. In this paper, a novel realization of the projection operators using a minimum number of permutative ternary Muthukrishnan-Stroud (M-S) gates is presented. Next, an efficient method for logic simplification for ternary reversible logic is proposed. This method along with the new construction of projection operators yields significantly lower gate cost of approximately 31% less than that obtained by earlier methodologies, for the synthesis of ternary benchmark circuits.

Reversible Logic Based Mapping of Quaternary Sequential Circuits Using QGFSOP Expression

Mozammel H. A. Khan, Himanshu Thapliyal

Quaternary encoded binary circuits are more compact than their binary counterpart. Although several methods for designing binary reversible sequential circuits are presented, to the best of our knowledge, no design method for quaternary reversible sequential circuits has yet been reported in the literature. In this paper, we propose a design method for quaternary sequential circuits where the present state outputs are directly fedback to the next state determination circuit and that circuit is realized using QGFSOP expression as a cascade of one-digit, M-S, Feynman, and Toffoli gates. We also develop methods for making the sequential circuit falling-edge triggered and presettable using a quaternary Fred kin gate. As design examples, we present designs for up/down counters and universal registers. As there are no previous designs of quaternary sequential circuits, the closest comparison is made with designs of two-digit quaternary counter and universal register with designs of equivalent four-bit binary counter and universal register, respectively. In comparison to the equivalent binary designs, the proposed method requires less ancilla inputs with an increase in quantum cost.
