A Realistic Model for Observing Spin-Balanced Fulde–Ferrell Superfluid in Honeycomb Lattices

Abstract

The combination of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and in-plane Zeeman field breaks time-reversal and inversion symmetries of Fermi gases and becomes a popular way to produce single plane wave Fulde–Ferrell (FF) superfluid. However, atom loss and heating related to SOC have impeded the successful observation of FF state until now. In this work, we propose the realization of spin-balanced FF superfluid in a honeycomb lattice without SOC and the Zeeman field. A key ingredient of our scheme is generating complex hopping terms in original honeycomb lattices by periodical driving. In our model the ground state is always the FF state, thus the experimental observation has no need of fine tuning. The other advantages of our scheme are its simplicity and feasibility, and thus may open a new route for observing FF superfluids.

Superfluid weight and Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless temperature of spin-imbalanced and spin–orbit-coupled Fulde–Ferrell phases in lattice systems

Aleksi Julku, Long Liang, Päivi Törmä

We study the superfluid weight D s and Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) transition temperatures T BKT in case of exotic Fulde–Ferrell (FF) superfluid states in lattice systems. We consider spin-imbalanced systems with and without spin–orbit coupling (SOC) accompanied with in-plane Zeeman field. By applying mean-field theory, we derive general equations for D s and T BKT in the presence of SOC and the Zeeman fields for 2D Fermi–Hubbard lattice models, and apply our results to a 2D square lattice. We show that conventional spin-imbalanced FF states without SOC can be observed at finite temperatures and that FF phases are further stabilized against thermal fluctuations by introducing SOC. We also propose how topologically non-trivial SOC-induced FF phases could be identified experimentally by studying the total density profiles. Furthermore, the relative behavior of transverse and longitudinal superfluid weight components and the role of the geometric superfluid contribution are discussed.

Fulde-Ferrell Superfluids without Spin Imbalance in Driven Optical Lattices

Zhen Zheng, Chunlei Qu, Xu‐Bo Zou +1 more

Spin-imbalanced ultracold Fermi gases have been widely studied recently as a platform for exploring the long-sought Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluid phases, but so far conclusive evidence has not been found. Here we propose to realize an Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superfluid without spin imbalance in a three-dimensional fermionic cold atom optical lattice, where s- and p-orbital bands of the lattice are coupled by another weak moving optical lattice. Such coupling leads to a spin-independent asymmetric Fermi surface, which, together with the s-wave scattering interaction between two spins, yields an FF type of superfluid pairing. Unlike traditional schemes, our proposal does not rely on the spin imbalance (or an equivalent Zeeman field) to induce the Fermi surface mismatch and provides a completely new route for realizing FF superfluids.

Fulde-Ferrell superfluids without spin-imbalance in three-dimensional driven spinful fermionic optical lattices

Spin-imbalanced ultra-cold Fermi gases have been widely studied recently as a platform for exploring the long-sought Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluid phases, but so far conclusive evidence has not been found. Here we propose to realize an FF superfluid without spin imbalance in a three-dimensional (3D) fermionic cold atom optical lattice, where sand p-orbital bands of the lattice are coupled by another weak moving optical lattice. Such coupling leads to a spin-independent asymmetric Fermi surface, which, together with the s-wave scattering interaction between two spins, yields an FF type of superfluid pairing. Unlike traditional schemes, our proposal does not rely on the spin imbalance (or an equivalent Zeeman field) to induce the Fermi surface mismatch and may provide a completely new route for realizing FF superfluids.

Inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell superfluidity in spin-orbit-coupled atomic Fermi gases

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu

Inhomogeneous superfluidity lies at the heart of many intriguing phenomena in quantum physics. It is believed to play a central role in unconventional organic or heavy-fermion superconductors, chiral quark matter, and neutron star glitches. However, so far even the simplest form of inhomogeneous superfluidity, the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) pairing state with a single center-of-mass momentum, is not conclusively observed due to the intrinsic complexibility of any realistic Fermi systems in nature. Here we theoretically predict that the controlled setting of ultracold fermionic atoms with synthetic spin-orbit coupling induced by a two-photon Raman process, demonstrated recently in cold-atom laboratories, provides a promising route to realize the long-sought FF superfluidity. At experimentally accessible low temperatures, the FF superfluid state dominates the phase diagram, in sharp contrast to the conventional case without spin-orbit coupling. We show that the finite center-of-mass momentum carried by Cooper pairs is directly measurable via momentum-resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy. Our work opens the way to direct observation and characterization of inhomogeneous superfluidity.

Topological Fulde–Ferrell superfluids of a spin–orbit coupled Fermi gas

Yong Xu, Chuanwei Zhang

Topological Fermi superfluids have played the central role in various fields of physics. However, all previous studies focus on the cases where Cooper pairs have zero center-of-mass momenta (i.e., normal superfluids). The topology of Fulde–Ferrell (FF) superfluids with nonzero momentum pairings have never been explored until recent findings that FF superfluids in a spin–orbit (SO) coupled Fermi gas can accommodate Majorana fermions in real space in low dimensions and Weyl fermions in momentum space in three dimension. In this review, we first discuss the mechanism of pairings in SO coupled Fermi gases in optical lattices subject to Zeeman fields, showing that SO coupling as well as Zeeman fields enhance FF states while suppress Larkin–Ovchinnikov states. We then present the low temperature phase diagram including both FF superfluids and topological FF superfluids phases in both two dimension and three dimension. In one dimension, Majorana fermions as well as phase dependent order parameter are visualized. In three dimension, we show the properties of Weyl fermions in momentum space such as anisotropic linear dispersion, Fermi arch, and gaplessness away from k⊥ = 0. Finally, we discuss some possible methods to probe FF superfluids and topological FF superfluids in cold atom systems.
