Abstract

Zero area single photons are generated through the resonant interaction of a parametric-down-conversion single photon with a dense atomic ensemble. This indicates a new pathway for developing a quantum memory for broadband single photons.

Zero-Area Single-Photon Pulses

L. S. Costanzo, A. S. Coelho, Daniele Pellegrino +6 more

Broadband single photons are usually considered not to couple efficiently to atomic gases because of the large mismatch in bandwidth. Contrary to this intuitive picture, here we demonstrate that the interaction of ultrashort single photons with a dense resonant atomic sample deeply modifies the temporal shape of their wave packet mode without degrading their nonclassical character, and effectively generates zero-area single-photon pulses. This is a clear signature of strong transient coupling between single broadband (THz-level) light quanta and atoms, with intriguing fundamental implications and possible new applications to the storage of quantum information.

Background and Review of Cavity-Enhanced Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

Oliver Slattery, Lijun Ma, Kevin Zong +1 more

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a nonlinear crystal has been a workhorse for the generation of entangled and correlated single-photon pairs used for quantum communications applications for nearly three decades. However, as a naturally broadband process, the ability of SPDC to interface with the very narrow energy transitions in atomic ensembles for implementing quantum memories, which are needed for quantum repeaters to extend the reach of quantum communications, was initially limited. To overcome this limitation, the process was enhanced by placing the nonlinear crystal inside a resonating cavity. This modified process has some important advantages, including narrowing the spectral linewidth of generated photons into brighter resonant modes of the cavity, and the ability to lock the desired mode of the cavity to the targeted transition frequency of the atomic ensemble. This paper presents an overview of the principle of cavity-enhanced SPDC, a review of works to date using this technique, and an example of one of these implementations.

Photon echo in ring cavity: pulse area approach

Moiseev, Sergey A., R. V. Urmancheev

Pulse area approach has been established as a versatile analytical tool for studying the resonant interaction between the light and the resonant atomic ensemble. In recent years photon and spin echoes in cavity assisted schemes become increasingly interesting. In this article we develop the photon echo pulse area approach to describe primary and multi-pulse echo generation in the atomic ensemble placed in the ring cavity. We show that the pulse area approach predicts relative echo magnitudes and whether the system is operating in a single- or a multi-pulse generation regime. We also analyze the conditions needed for the realization of these generation regimes. This work develops the pulse area theorem approach for analytical study of photon/spin echoes in optical and microwave cavities and echo based protocols of quantum memory.
