Coherent effects in the propagation of coupled bright solitons

Abstract

The coherent propagation of a pair of matched pulses in a doped two-mode nonlinear dispersive waveguide is investigated, where the dopant is modeled by a V-type three-level system. Relations involving the parameters of the pulses and the propagation medium that allow us to observe the formation of coupled bright solitons are derived. The analytical result is verified by numerically solving the propagation equations together with the evolution of the three-level system. The numerical results show a stable propagation of the pair of pulses corroborating the theoretical result.

Coherent soliton propagation through doped optical fibers: cloning, breakup, and soliton interactions

The simultaneous propagation of two optical pulses through a doped nonlinear dispersive medium modelled by a resonant three-level system was investigated numerically, within the framework of a pair of coupled extended nonlinear Schrödinger equations. These included the contribution of the dopant resonances whose dynamics is governed by Bloch equations. In this work, we review the interesting possibilities on the manipulation of fields such as cloning, breakup and soliton interactions, that the combination of coherent population trapping with nonlinear dispersive media offers.

Soliton interaction in a nonlinear waveguide in the presence of resonances

The simultaneous propagation of two optical pulses through a nonlinear dispersive medium composed of a resonant three-level system is investigated. By choosing a soliton of area 4 pi and order N=2 at the pump frequency, together with a weaker pulse with a sech profile at the signal frequency, we show that the pump soliton breaks up into a pair of solitary waves which are cloned to the signal frequency. Due to a combination of coherent population trapping and nonlinear dispersive effects, the pair interacts in a repulsive fashion so that the taller wave travels faster than the shorter one.

Coupled solitons in rare-earth doped two-mode fiber

Tarak Nath Dey, S. Dutta Gupta, G. S. Agarwal

We present first ever analytical solutions for shape-preserving pulses in a Kerr nonlinear two-mode fiber doped with 3-level ? atoms. The two modes are near-resonant with the two transitions of the atomic system. We show the existence of quasi-stable coupled bright-dark pairs if the group velocity dispersion has opposite signs at the two mode frequencies. We demonstrate the remarkable possibility allowed by the fiber dispersion for the existence of a new class of solutions for unequal coupling constants for the two modes. We present the conditions for existence and the analytical form of these solutions in presence of atomic detuning. We confirm numerically the analytical solutions for the spatio-temporal evolution of coupled solitary waves.

Phase-controlled stable solitons in nonlinear fibers

K. V. Rajitha, Chinmayee Mishra, Tarak Nath Dey +1 more

Bright and grey coupled solitons with complex envelopes are obtained as exact solutions of the system describing doped optical nonlinear fibers. The solitons formed are found to be free of amplitude and phase instabilities during their evolution, leading to the realization of stable soliton propagation. The phase of the input solitons plays a crucial role in the formation of tanh–sech paired pulses. This soliton is not supported in a two-level atomic medium and is exclusive to the Λ system.
