Abstract

All-fiber systems for third harmonic generation are of great interest because they can be used for the inverse process, namely, the generation of entangled photon triplets. Usually, chromatic dispersion prevents phase matching between the incident and generated radiation when they are both guided in an LP01-like mode. Here, we present a hybrid photonic crystal fiber that has been designed for phase matched third harmonic generation from 1596 to 532 nm in single-lobed modes. The third harmonic radiation is guided by an all-solid bandgap microstructure, while the pump frequency is confined by conventional total internal reflection. The fiber is also suitable for the generation of photon triplet states.

Direct observation of third-order spontaneous down conversion, where three low energy photons are generated from a single one, remains a challenging task. We report here on different strategies based on engineered optical fibers. These include gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers, hybrid- and tapered fibers.

Direct decay of pump photons into triplets is an interesting but not-yet-realized nonlinear effect. We are exploring two approaches using photonic crystal fibers: a gas-filled hollow-core PCF and the recently designed hybrid solid-core PCF.

Efficient third harmonic generation in photonic nanowires

Neil G. R. Broderick, Max A. Lohe, Timothy Lee +2 more

In a photonic nanowire the strong optical confinement allows for the phase matching of nonlinear interactions that would not normally be phase matched, while the large longitudinal component of the electric field serves to further enhance the effective nonlinearity. Thus such waveguides are good choices for studying nonlinear effects such as third harmonic generation. In this paper we analyse third harmonic generation analytically and present the criteria for optimal harmonic generation. In addition we analyse the inverse process of 1/3 harmonic generation and show that efficient parametric amplifiers can be made which would be a high brightness source of entangled photons for producing GHZ states.

Third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion in thin optical fibers as a photon-triplet source

María Corona, Karina Garay-Palmett, Alfred B. U’Ren

We study the third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion (TOSPDC) process, as a means to generate entangled photon triplets. Specifically, we consider thin optical fibers as the nonlinear medium to be used as the basis for TOSPDC in configurations where phase matching is attained through the use of more than one fiber transverse modes. Our analysis in this paper, which follows from our earlier paper [Opt. Lett. 36, 190--192 (2011)], aims to supply experimentalists with the details required in order to design a TOSPDC photon-triplet source. Specifically, our analysis focuses on the photon triplet state, on the rate of emission, and on the TOSPDC phase-matching characteristics for the cases of frequency-degenerate and frequency nondegenerate TOSPDC.

We generate correlated photon pairs at 839 nm and 1392 nm from a single-mode photonic crystal fiber pumped in the normal dispersion regime. This compact, bright, tunable, single-mode source of pair-photons will have wide application in quantum communications.

Spectrally pure photons generated in a quasi-phase matched xenon-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber

Walker D. Larson, Trevor L. Courtney, Christian K. Keyser

Spectrally pure photons heralded from unentangled photon pair sources are crucial for any quantum optical system reliant on the multiplexing of heralded photons from independent sources. Generation of unentangled photon pairs in gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers specifically remains an attractive architecture for integration into quantum-optical fiber networks. The dispersion design offered by selection of fiber microstructures and gas pressure allows considerable control over the group-velocity profile which dictates the wavelengths of photon pairs that can be generated without spectral entanglement. Here, we expand on this design flexibility, which has previously been implemented for four-wave mixing, by modeling the use of a static, periodically poled electric field to achieve an effective quasi-phase-matched three-wave mixing nonlinearity that creates spontaneous parametric downconversion. Electric-field-induced quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric downconversion enables control of phase matching conditions that is independent of the group velocity, allowing phase matching at arbitrary wavelengths without affecting the entanglement of photons at those wavelengths. This decoupling of entanglement engineering and phase matching facilitates spectrally pure photon pair generation with efficiency and wavelength-tunability that is otherwise unprecedented.
