Interference effects on quantum light group velocity in cavity induced transparency

Abstract

Abstract We investigate the propagation of a quantized probe field in a dense medium composed of three-level Λ-type systems under cavity electromagnetically induced transparency conditions. We treat the medium as composed of collective states of the three-level systems while the light-medium interaction occurs within clusters of such collective states depending on the photon number state of the probe field. We observe slower group velocity for lower photon number input probe field only under conditions of no interference between different clusters of collective states in the system.

Nonlinear Theory of Light Speed Reduction in a Three-Level Λ System

Dezhong Wang, Daijun Li, Xia-Ji Liu +2 more

We present a nonlinear theory of light velocity reduction in a three-level Λ system based on electromagnetically induced transparency. Analysis shows that the probe field propagates with a velocity that is quite strongly dependent on its intensity instead of being merely approximately dependent on the coupling intensity. Moreover, the minimum group velocity of the probe field is analytically given for a given input power.

Control over group velocity in a three-level closed Λ system via spontaneously generated coherence and dynamically induced coherence

Sulagna Dutta, Krishna Rai Dastidar

The light propagation of a probe field in a three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping has been studied when both dynamically induced coherence (DIC) and spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) play a significant role. We have investigated the group velocity of probe field and hence the group index of a three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping when both DIC and SGC play a significant role. We have shown that by varying the probe field Rabi frequency one can control the interference between these two coherences which leads to different nonlinear response (amplification without inversion, electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption) leading to different (positive and negative) dispersion. Hence control over switching of group velocity from subluminal to superluminal and vice versa can be achieved. We have also shown that when the contributions from both the coherences are comparable, the dependence of group velocity of probe field in a three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping on phase difference between probe and coherent fields is different from that obtained under the weak probe field condition. Going beyond the weak probe field approximation we have derived analytical expressions for group velocity and hence the group index in the steady state limit (keeping all orders of system parameters) to generalize the analysis, and these expressions can be used for any set of system parameters without any restriction. The numerical values obtained by solving the density matrix equations agree well with these exact analytical values at a large time limit. We have proposed a scheme for experimental realization of EIT and hence subluminal light propagation in molecules by invoking spontaneously generated coherence.

The effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system

Le Van Doai

Abstract We propose an analytical model to study the effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity of probe light in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In this scheme, a nonlinearity of the medium is enhanced greatly around in three spectral regions corresponding to transparent windows. As a consequence, such a giant Kerr nonlinearity of the medium changes significantly group index for probe light which can obstruct light slowdown. Moreover, this model shows also that the probe propagation can switch between subluminal and superluminal modes in three EIT windows by adjusting the parameters of the signal and coupling fields. Such analytical model is not only convenient for considering the influence of laser parameters on group velocity but is also easy used to fit the experimental results.

Interference effects in light propagation in a three-level atomic medium in the loop configuration

Jakub Korociński, Andrzej Raczyński, Jarosław Zaremba +1 more

A strong control field coupling two empty states of a lambda system makes the medium transparent for a probe pulse. This phenomenon known as electromagnetically induced transparency is here modified by switching a weak microwave field coupling two lower states of the system. As a response to the control and microwave fields, the medium itself acts as a source of an electromagnetic wave which interferes with the incoming pulse. The properties of the net pulse leaving the sample, in particular its magnitude and multipeak shape, will be analyzed in detail, depending on the model parameters.

Propagation of Light in an Ensemble of

Yong Li, C. P. Sun

We study the propagation of a quantum probe light in an ensemble of 3+1-level atoms when the atoms are coupled to two other classical control fields. First we calculate the dispersion properties, such as susceptibility and group velocity, of the probe light within such an atomic medium under the case of three-photon resonance via the dynamical algebra method of collective atomic excitations. Then we calculate the dispersion of the probe light not only under the case that two classical control fields have the same detunings to the relative atomic transitions but also under the case that they have the different detunings. Our results show in both cases the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency can accur. Especially use the second case, we can find two transparency windows for the probe light.

Photon-Number Selective Group Delay in Cavity Induced Transparency

Gor Nikoghosyan, Michael Fleischhauer

We show that the group velocity of a probe pulse in an ensemble of Λ-type atoms driven by a quantized cavity mode depends on the quantum state-of-the input probe pulse. In the strong-coupling regime of the atom-cavity system the probe group delay is photon-number selective. This can be used to spatially separate the single photon from higher photon-number components of a few-photon probe pulse and thus create a deterministic single-photon source.
