Sub-Doppler retrofluorescence from an optically thick atomic vapor

Abstract

Sub-Doppler contributions are observed in back-fluorescence spectra of a dense laser-excited atomic vapor. These features have similarities with the narrow contributions observed in fluorescence or in absorption signals of thin vapor cells.

High spectral resolution photon detection has been achieved by exploiting the narrow absorption features of gas phase atoms. Velocity-selective excitation and coherent optical effects have allowed for increased spectral discrimination and laser Doppler velocimetry.

Backward-emitted sub-Doppler fluorescence from an optically thick atomic vapor

J. C. de Aquino Carvalho, Athanasios Laliotis, Martine Chevrollier +2 more

Literature mentions only incidentally a sub-Doppler contribution in the excitation spectrum of the backward fluorescence of a dense vapor. This contribution is here investigated on Cs vapor, both on the first resonance line (894 nm) and on the weaker second resonance line (459 nm). We show that in a strongly absorbing medium, the quenching of excited atoms moving towards a window irradiated under near normal incidence reduces the fluorescence on the red side of the excitation spectrum. Atoms moving slowly towards the window produce a sub-Doppler velocity-selective contribution, whose visibility is here improved by applying a frequency-modulation technique. This sub-Doppler feature, induced by a surface quenching combined with a short absorption length for the incident irradiation, exhibits close analogies with the narrow spectra appearing with thin vapor cells. We also show that a normal incidence irradiation is essential for the sub-Doppler feature to be observed, while it should be independent of the detection geometry.

Sub-Doppler features of optical processes in the Rb extremely thin cell filled with an additional buffer gas.

David G. Sarkisyan, G. Hakhumyan, Armen D. Sargsyan +2 more

Comparison of the resonant absorption and fluorescence in the extremely thin cell (ETC) filled with pure Rb with another one filled with Rb and Neon gas with the pressures 6 Torr and 20 Torr is provided. The effect of the collapse and revival of Dicke-type narrowing is still observable for the thickness L=λ/2, and L=λ, where λ is a resonant laser wavelength 794 nm (D1 line of the Rb), i.e. the spectra of the resonant absorption and fluorescence demonstrate the sub-Doppler narrowing for the thickness L=λ/2 and broadening for the thickness L=λ. It is important to note, that in an ordinary Rb cell with the thickness L in the range of 1mm- 10 cm filled with buffer gas, with a pressure higher than 1 Torr in the Saturation Absorption scheme, any sub-Doppler features are absent. For L= λ the so called velocity selective optical pumping (VSOP) resonance located at the atomic transition is still observable when Ne pressure is 6 Torr , while the linewidth is increased by 4 times in comparison with that obtained in the pure Rb ETC. This VSOP resonance is wash out when Ne pressure is 20 Torr. It is demonstrated that use of the fluorescence spectra at L=λ/2 allows one to use the ETC for the buffer gas pressure measurement. Comparison with the theory is presented.

Fluorescence Spectra Study in Extremely Thin Cs-Vapor Layers

Kapka Vaseva, P. Todorov, Dimitar G. Slavov +3 more

The high resolution spectroscopy of nanometric-thin alkali-vapor layers was made possible through the development of extremely thin cell.We have investigated the behavior of the extremely thin cell fluorescence spectra both experimentally and theoretically.Experiment is performed on the D 2 line of Cs-vapor-layer with thickness L = mλ, where m = 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25.For open optical transitions, the fluorescence spectra shows narrow dip on the top of the sub-Doppler-width fluorescence profile, at L ≥ λ.In case of closed transition, an extremely small feature in the fluorescence slightly shifted from its maximum is observed at L = (5/4)λ.The used theoretical model, based on the optical Bloch equations is in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations.
