Low-quantum cost circuit constructions for adder and symmetric Boolean functions

Abstract

Quantum computing necessitates the design of circuits via reversible logic gates. Efficient reversible circuit can be constructed by achieving low ancilla count, reducing logical depth and lowering Quantum costs. Generalized Peres gates have recently been realized with very low Quantum Cost (QC) by utilizing Quantum rotation gates. This is utilized in recent literature for efficient reversible circuit constructions for symmetric Boolean functions. In this paper, we extend this line of construction further by demonstrating efficient realization of adder circuits. In particular, we revisit the adder construction of Vedral, Barenco and Eckert to show that improvement of gate count and QC is achievable by exploiting a construction based only on Peres gates. We also report improved constructions of symmetric Boolean functions by following an approach recently proposed in the context of Boolean function complexity analysis.

Design and Implementation of an Efficient Quantum Cost Optimized Adder Using Reversible Logic Gates

In modern Very-Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) technology, managing information loss is a critical challenge. Conventional logic gates, such as AND, OR, and NOT, are prone to data loss during operations, reducing their efficiency for sophisticated applications. Reversible logic gates, which have an equal number of inputs and outputs, offer a solution by preserving data integrity. This paper presents the design and FPGA implementation of an efficient and high-speed full adder circuit utilizing reversible logic gates, namely Feynman, Toffoli, and Peres gates. The design focuses on improving computational efficiency and thermal performance. An analysis of the circuit's quantum cost, garbage outputs, and ancillary inputs reveals its advantages over traditional designs. Proposed design has been realized using Verilog and Synthesize and simulations performed using Xilinx Vivado and Xilinx ISE tools, confirms the functionality and efficiency of the proposed full adder. FPGA implementation of the design has been done using NEXYS A7 (Artix 7 series). The results show that the circuit has a quantum cost of 10, with two garbage outputs and one ancillary input, underscoring its potential for use in low-power, high-performance computing systems and quantum computing applications.

A Low Quantum Cost Implementation of Reversible Binary-Coded-Decimal Adder

Sheba Diamond Thabah, Prabir Saha

The prediction and forthcoming of a quantum computer into the real-world is the much gained research area over the last decades, which initiated the usefulness and profit of reversible computation because of its potentiality to reduce power consumption in designing arithmetic circuits. In this paper, two design approaches are proposed for the design of a reversible Binary-Coded-Decimal adder. The first approach is implemented and realized from reversible gates proposed by researchers in the technical literature capable of breaking down into primitive quantum gates, whereas the second approach is realized from the existing synthesizable reversible gates only. Parallel implementations of such circuits have been carried out through the proper selection and arrangements of the gates to improve the reversible performance parameters. The proposed design approaches offer a low quantum cost along-with lower delay and hardware complexity for any n-digit addition. Analysis results of proposed design 1 show appreciable improvements over gate count, quantum cost, and delay by at least 9 %, 17 %, and 26 % respectively, whereas, the proposed design 2 show that the results significantly improve the parameters (gate count, quantum cost, and delay) by at least 45 %, 33 %, and 50 % respectively compared to existing counterparts found in the literature.

Design and Development of Cost Optimized Quantum Binary-Coded Decimal Adder using Reversible Logic Gates

Parna Kundu, Mousom Chatterjee, Susmita Biswas +6 more

Within this paper, the authors introduce a new cost optimized quantum Binary-Coded Decimal (BCD) adder circuit that utilizes reversible gates as its building blocks. The newly proposed quantum BCD adder is specifically constructed with the inclusion of double Peres gates (DPG), Peres gates (PG), BJN gates, Feynman gates (FG), and reversible NOT gates. To bring this idea to life, we undertook the design and implementation of the proposed circuit using the Qiskit simulator provided by the IBM Quantum Computing lab. Our evaluation of the newly optimized BCD adder circuit yielded the following metrics, the quantum cost of 47, the constant input of 8, garbage output of 12, and a delay of 10. When compared to previously reported results, we observed significant improvements in various aspects, with a 25.39% reduction in quantum cost, a 28.57% decrease in constant input, and a 36.84% reduction in garbage output.

Construction of Boolean Logic Gates Using QFT-Based Adder Architecture

Ayda Kaltehei, Murat Kurt, Azmi Gençten +1 more

In this study, we construct the quantum reversible counterparts of the logical AND, OR, XOR, NOR, and NAND gates. We utilize a quantum Fourier transform (QFT)-based adder circuit that replicates the functionality of a digital half-adder, which computes the sum and carry of two input bits using XOR and AND gates, respectively. To realize different logic gate operations, we apply pre- and post-processing to the QFT-adder using quantum gates, leveraging Boolean algebra properties to enable conversions between various logical functions. Although the number of elementary quantum logic gates increases for a small number of inputs-making the approach appear inefficient at first glance-the overall required qubit count is reduced compared to non-QFT-based designs as the number of inputs increases.

A Quantum Cost 9 Reversible Full Adder with Single-Toffoli Complexity

GEORGE PAPAKONSTANTINOU

The minimization of Quantum Cost (QC), specifically the number of Toffoli gates, is a primary objective in the synthesis of reversible arithmetic circuits. For decades, the Peres Full Adder has been considered the benchmark for minimal realizations, requiring 2 Toffoli gates and a Quantum Cost of 12. In this note, we propose a novel reversible Full Adder circuit that utilizes only one Toffoli gate and four CNOT gates. The proposed design achieves a Quantum Cost of 9, representing a 25% reduction compared to the Peres structure, while maintaining a competitive logical depth of 4. We rigorously verify the logic and demonstrate that the reduction is achieved through the automated synthesis framework recently proposed by the authors.
