The Dynamics of Wave-Particle Duality

Adriano Orefice, Raffaele Giovanelli, Domenico Ditto

Both classical and wave-mechanical monochromatic waves may be treated in terms of exact ray-trajectories (encoded in the structure itself of Helmholtz-like equations) whose mutual coupling is the one and only cause of any diffraction and interference process. In the case of Wave Mechanics, de Broglie’s merging of Maupertuis’s and Fermat’s principles (see Section 3) provides, without resorting to the probability-based guidance-laws and flow-lines of the Bohmian theory, the simple law addressing particles along the Helmholtz rays of the relevant matter waves. The purpose of the present research was to derive the exact Hamiltonian ray-trajectory systems concerning, respectively, classical electromagnetic waves, non-relativistic matter waves and relativistic matter waves. We faced then, as a typical example, the numerical solution of non-relativistic wave-mechanical equation systems in a number of numerical applications, showing that each particle turns out to “dances a wave-mechanical dance” around its classical trajectory, to which it reduces when the ray-coupling is neglected. Our approach reaches the double goal of a clear insight into the mechanism of wave-particle duality and of a reasonably simple computability. We finally compared our exact dynamical approach, running as close as possible to Classical Mechanics, with the hydrodynamic Bohmian theory, based on fluid-like “guidance laws”.

Maxwell Matter Waves

Dana Z. Anderson

Maxwell matter waves emerge from a perspective, complementary to de Broglie's, that matter is fundamentally a wave phenomenon whose particle aspects are revealed by quantum mechanics. Their quantum mechanical description is derived through the introduction of a matter vector potential, having frequency $ω_0$, to Schrodinger's equation for a massive particle. Maxwell matter waves are then seen to be coherent excitations of a single-mode of the matter-wave field. In the classical regime, their mechanics is captured by a matter analog of Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic field. As such, Maxwell matter waves enable a spectrum of systems that have useful optical analogs, such as resonant matter-wave interferometric sensors and matter-wave parametric oscillators. These waves are associated with a wavelength that is tied to the drive frequency $ω_0$ rather than to the massive particle's energy, as is ordinarily the case with de Broglie matter waves. As a result, simple interferometric measurements lead to different outcomes for the two types of waves. While their apparent departure from de Broglie character is surprising, Maxwell matter waves are wholly consistent with quantum mechanics.

Wave-Particle Duality Revitalized: Consequences, Applications and Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

Himanshu Chauhan, Swati Rawal, Ravindra Kumar Sinha

The proposed paper presents the unobserved inadequacies in de Broglie's concepts of wave-particle duality and matter waves in the year 1923. The commonly admitted quantum energy or frequency expression hν=γmc2 is shown to be inappropriate for matter waves and is acceptable only for photons. The superluminal phase velocity expression c2/\u{psion}, for matter waves, is investigated in detail and is also reported to be inadequate. The rectifications in the inadequate concepts of de Broglie's theory and refinements in the analogy implementation between light waves and matter waves are presented, which provides the modified frequency and phase velocity expression for matter waves. Mathematical proofs for the proposed modified frequency and phase velocity expression are also presented. In accordance with the proposed concepts, a wave-particle duality picture is presented which elucidates the questions coupled with the wave-particle duality, existing in the literature. Consequently, particle type nature is shown to be a characteristic of waves only, independent from the presence of matter. The modifications introduced in the frequency expression for matter waves leads to variation in the wave function expression for a freely moving particle and its energy operators, with appropriate justifications. A new relation between the Kinetic energy and Momentum of the moving body is proposed and is subsequently applied to introduce novel General and Relativistic Quantum Mechanical Wave Equations. Applications of these equations in bound state quantum mechanical systems provide the information regarding particle's general and relativistic behavior in such systems. Moreover, the proposed wave equations can also be transformed into Schrödinger's and Dirac's equations. The interrelation of Schrödinger's, Dirac's and proposed equations with the universal wave equation is also presented.
