The new generation of optical fiber communication systems,which transmit information by optical soliton,is a revolution in optical communication technology.The article introduces the mechanism and influential factors,briefly analyses the key skills in optical soliton communication technology,and discusses the current situation and trend in the field both at home and abroad.

In 1989 it was shown that erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs)1 are useful for soliton amplification and transmission.2 It was also shown that a lumped amplifier technique which uses EDFAs made it possible to move the dream of soliton communication into the developmental stage.3
