CAN QUANTUM MECHANICS HELP DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING?

Anne Broadbent, Alain Tapp

We present a brief survey of results where quantum information processing is useful for performing distributed computation tasks. We describe problems that are impossible to solve using classical resources but that become feasible with the help of quantum mechanics. We also give examples where the use of quantum information significantly reduces the need for communication. The main focus of the survey is on communication complexity but we also address other distributed tasks.

Quantum Information Processing in Nanostructures

Alexandra Olaya-Castro, Neil F. Johnson

Semiconductor quantum dots integrated with ultrafast spectroscopy technology are prime candidates for building scalable architectures for Quantum Information Processing. In this review paper we survey the current state of theoretical proposals concerning all-optical control of nanostructure qubits and their interactions. These schemes offer potential for ultrafast optical manipulation of quantum information in time scales within the coherence time.

Nanoelectromechanical systems and quantum information processing

Alexander V. Tsukanov

Application of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMSs) as one of the structural components of quantum computers assumes a high level of coherent control of their state. In this case, such objects could perform certain functions in the coding, storing, and transportation of quantum information, and serve as auxiliary elements for processing such information. This paper contains a survey of basic theoretical and experimental results proving the possibility of coherent manipulations with phonon states of NEMSs, their cooling to the ground vibrational state, and organization of controllable interaction between them and other quantum information carriers.
