Bound states of two electrons described by thet-Jmodel

A. G. Petukhov, J. Gala´n, José Antonio Vergés

A detailed study of the behavior of two electrons in the square lattice is presented in which the dynamics of the electronic pair is described by the t-J model. The conditions for the formation of bound states, pair correlation functions, and the energy spectra are obtained. The analysis is extended to the Cooper problem, i.e., to the study of the wave function of two electrons above the filled Fermi sea. Finally, the quantitative relationship between the t-J model and the one-band Hubbard model is numerically investigated for the two-electron problem.

The Cooper pair problem for generalized Fermi surfaces

MANUEL DE LLANO, James P. Vary

The Frohlich second-order perturbative treatment of the electron-phonon system with a generalized Fermi sea is extended to infinite order by solving the Cooper electron-pair problem in that sea. Substantially tighter-bound pairs follow for fixed coupling no matter how weak.

The Cooper problem in nanoscale: enhancement of the coupling due to confinement

In 1956 Cooper demonstrated (1956 Phys. Rev. 104 1189) that, no matter how weak the attraction is, two electrons in three-dimensional (3D) space just above the Fermi sea could be bound. In this work we investigate the influence of confinement on the binding energy of a Cooper pair. We show that confinement-induced modification of the Fermi sea results in a significant increase of the binding energy, when the bottom of an energy subband is very close to the Fermi surface.
