AMPLIFICATION AND PHASE CONJUGATION OF WEAK SIGNALS

Oleg V. Kulagin, Guerman A. Pasmanik, Alexander A. Shilov

The results of the study on phase conjugation of weak optical signals with the energy of units of photons are considered. Basic concepts of a semi-classical theoretical approach to describe amplification and phase conjugation (PC) of such signals are presented. A review is given on the experimental investigations that allowed for reaching a limit (about 1 photon for a mode) sensitivity of optical systems with PC-mirrors for a large (~ 105) number of resolution elements. High-sensitivity PC-mirror optical systems are demonstrated for a variety of applications.

AMPLIFICATION COMPETITION BETWEEN THE FANNING NOISE AND THE SIGNAL BEAM IN LiNbO 3∶Fe, M(M=Mg 2+ ,Zn 2+ ,In 3+ ,Sc 3+ ) CRYSTALS

Guoquan Zhang

The light amplification mechanism of fanning noise in doped lithium niobate crystals was analyzed and the light amplification competition between the signal beam and the fanning noise was discussed. Results show that, due to the light amplification competition between the signal beam and the fanning noise, there exists an optimum photovoltaic field in doped lithium niobate crystals and an optimum pump intensity for the light amplification of signal beam. With such optimum conditions, the signal beam can be amplified maximally while the fanning noise is very weak.
