Generating grid states from Schrödinger-cat states without postselection

Daniel J. Weigand, Barbara M. Terhal

Grid (or comb) states are an interesting class of bosonic states introduced by Gottesman, Kitaev, and Preskill [D. Gottesman, A. Kitaev, and J. Preskill, Phys. Rev. A 64, 012310 (2001)] to encode a qubit into an oscillator. A method to generate or ``breed'' a grid state from Schr\"odinger cat states using beam splitters and homodyne measurements is known [H. M. Vasconcelos, L. Sanz, and S. Glancy, Opt. Lett. 35, 3261 (2010)], but this method requires postselection. In this paper we show how postprocessing of the measurement data can be used to entirely remove the need for postselection, making the scheme much more viable. We bound the asymptotic behavior of the breeding procedure and demonstrate the efficacy of the method numerically.

Breeding the Cat Through Superposition of Two Schrodinger Kittens Based on Coupled Waveguides

Nuo Wang, Zhang, Xinchen, Qi Liu +3 more

Optical Schrodinger's cat (SC) is highly anticipated because of the potential of realizing fault-tolerant quantum computing, but the practical merit is only shown when the amplitude is larger than 2. However, such high-amplitude cats have not been prepared due to the limitations rooted in the existing method. Here, we demonstrate a principle that a large SC-like state can be generated by the superposition of two kittens in which two nearby coherent states interfere and grow to an enlarged coherent-like state. Further, we propose a scheme to breed the cat beyond the limitation in the former works with a high probability by realizing the superposition of two SCs in coupled waveguides. The principle and scheme demonstrated here provide a new perspective on understanding quantum superposition in phase space and a better solution for the efficient generation of SCs on chips.

Generation of squeezed Schrödinger cat states with an operation allowing iterative growth

Jean Etesse, Martin Bouillard, Bhaskar Kanseri +1 more

We present what is to our knowledge the first implementation of a Schrödinger cat states "breeding" operation, which allows an iterative growth of these states. We thus report the experimental generation of a squeezed Schrödinger cat state from two single photon Fock states, which can be seen as cat states with zero amplitude. These Fock states are mixed on a symmetrical beamsplitter and the generation is heralded by a homodyne measurement in one of the two output arms. The output state has a fidelity of 61% with an even squeezed Schrödinger cat state of amplitude $α=1.63$. This hybrid operation opens up new prospects in quantum optics as the protocol depicted here can be iterated in order to produce new kind of mesoscopic states.
