The distinction of external (exo) and internal (endo) perspectives is addressed with respect to the issues of observation and measurement in quantum theory. It is demonstrated how the exo/endo-terminology can be fruitfully applied to two equally important concepts of reality in the quantum world: local (common sense) reality and holistic (nonlocal) reality. Basic elements of the exo/endo-distinction are then used to interpret certain features concerning the issues of time, histories, and presence.

Effect of quantum interference on multiphoton resonant excitation involving high-lying Rydberg orbitals

L. Deng, W. R. Garrett, M. G. Payne +1 more

We report observations of destructive quantum interference in multiphoton resonant excitation of high-lying Rydberg states in xenon. In a recent laser-induced breakdown experiment by Peet [Phys. Rev. A 51, 3982 (1995)], it was claimed that the interference was absent for such high-lying states. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Lasers without inversion: Interference of lifetime-broadened resonances

Stephen E. Harris

We show that if two upper levels of a four-level laser system are purely lifetime broadened, and decay to an identical continuum, then there will be an interference in the absorption profile of lower-level atoms, and that this interference is absent from the stimulated emission profile of the upper-level atoms. Laser amplification may then be obtained without inversion. Examples include interfering autoionizing levels, and tunneling systems.
