Field cross correlation is used to attain picosecond or sub-picosecond resolution in the time domain analysis of coherent optical emission triggered by long broad bandwidth light pulses. Optical data recording and retrieval is demonstrated in gaseous and in solid samples.

Picosecond resolution in amplitude cross-correlation experiments with nanosecond sources

A. Bouchene, Anne Débarre, J. Keller +2 more

Although ultrashort laser pulses are usually needed for the optical exploration of ultrafast relaxation processes, it is known that the same time resolution can be attained with long duration pulses, provided their coherence time τc is shorter than the investigated process characteristic time. A time delayed four-wave mixing configuration is then used.

Until now all reported studies of transient spectroscopy with incoherent light, including photon echo and pump-probe spectroscopy, were concerned with two-level systems where quasi-monochromatic light of only one frequency couples the two levels.[1-4] However, there exist various coherent transient phenomena where light of two or more frequencies are concerned, and time resolution of the transient spectroscopies using these phenomena are also expected to be limited not by the duration of used light pulses but by the correlation time of the radiation fields.[5]
