Linear amplification, squeezed states and phase properties of light

John Alfio Vaccaro

In this thesis we examine linear amplification of squeezed light, the phase properties of squeezed light and the effect on the phase of light from linear amplification. Previous studies of linear amplifiers of light have shown that (i) when amplifying squeezed light the power gain must be less than 2 to preserve some squeezing in the output light; and (ii) a squeezed output cannot be generated from a non-squeezed input. However, these studies were restricted to a class of linear amplifier that can now be identified as not being squeezed. In this thesis we show how to breach the gain limit with a squeezed linear amplifier, and how to generate squeezed light using a squeezed linear attenuator.

s-parametrized quasiprobability distribution functions on a linear amplifier

A.‐S. F. Obada, G. M. Abd Al-Kader

The s-parametrized characteristic function for the output light is given. The s-ordered distribution functions for the output of a linear amplifier are investigated. The input light field of the linear amplifier is assumed to be a squeezed displaced Fock state. Various moments are calculated by using the s-ordered characteristic function for the output linear amplifier. The various distribution functions of the output fields are plotted as functions of the interaction time. The phase distribution for the output light is discussed.

Reflection of light from amplifying medium

R. V. Karapetyan

The existing linear theory of the reflection of light waves from an amplifying medium is debated. The exiting data are often contradictory, a reflection coefficient of amplifying medium of greater than unity is discussed, an upper bound of 5.82 is imposed on this quantity, significant corrections of prelaser concepts regarding the reflection and refraction of light in such media are proposed, etc. This stimulates reconsideration of the existing results. Evidently, the corresponding analysis must be based on the data obtained with a commonly accepted and, preferably, simplest approach. In our opinion, such an approach represents an analytical continuation of the known prelaser achievements (the Airy formulas for the reflection and transmission of light in a transparent medium proposed in 1833) to the domain of the amplifying media. The results presented can improve the basis of a linear theory for the interaction of light with amplifying media.
