We investigate the properties of low-lying photoexcited states of a one-dimensional (1D) ionic extended Hubbard model at half-filling. Numerical analysis by using the full and Lanczos diagonalization methods shows that, in the ionic phase, there exist low-lying photoexcited states below the charge transfer gap. As a result of comparison with numerical data for the 1D antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg model, it was found that, for a small alternating potential Δ, these low-lying photoexcited states are spin excitations, which is consistent with a previous analytical study [Katsura et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 177402 (2009)]. As Δ increases, the spectral intensity of the 1D ionic extended Hubbard model rapidly deviates from that of the 1D AF Heisenberg model and it is clarified that this deviation is due to the neutral-ionic domain wall, an elementary excitation near the neutral-ionic transition point.
The photoexcitation of a quasicontinuum of atomic or molecular levels by a laser pulse with a fast rise-time is considered. We first generalize non-perturbative treatments of quasicontinuum excitation. A second general theoretical method is developed in which resonant states are considered non-perturbatively whereas background non-resonant states are included through a perturbative approximation. As a simple example we show how our method describes the photoexcitation of a quasicontinuum of equally spaced levels, exhibiting Rabi oscillations periodically perturbed by background states. We then examine the case of a Rydberg series of highly excited states coherently excited from a low-lying initial state. The time evolution of the coherent superposition of Rydberg levels is shown to be a perturbed Rabi oscillation, but without the periodic disruption of the equally spaced quasicontinuum. Finally, we include the effect of further excitation to a second continuum.
We present results which probe the structure of
85Rb2 very near its lowest dissociation limit. To obtain these results, we used two different variations of photoassociation spectroscopy of laser-cooled and trapped
85Rb atoms. First, we have determined the positions of twelve of the highest vibrational levels of
85Rb2, all bound by less than
0.7cm−1, with two-color (free-bound-bound) photoassociation spectroscopy. The levels lie in an energy range for which singlet and triplet states are strongly mixed by the hyperfine interaction. We found that we could accurately describe these states with a novel coupled-channels inverse perturbation analysis. In a second experiment, we have carried out Zeeman-resolved photoassociation spectroscopy. This technique allowed us to probe the energy range in the lowest part of the electronic ground state continuum, which lies between the dissociation limits corresponding to different hyperfine states of the separated atoms. With this method, we have observed a Feshbach scattering resonance in the continuum for the first time, which we find can be tuned to zero energy with a magnetic field.
