Coherence and Decoherence Effects on Lasing with o without Population Inversion in a Four-level Atomic System

The effects of coherence and decoherence on lasing with or without population inversion in a fourlevel atomic system has been analyzed. It has shown that a change from a noninversion laser to a conventional inversion laser action can occur as the Rabi frequency of the driving field increases; another change from an inversion laser to a noninversion laser action can also occur due to the linewidth of the driving field.

Effects of Atomic Coherence on Linewidth of Lassers withand without Population Inversion

Xiong Jin

Atomic coherence effects on three-level system in which two levels are coupled by a driving field are investigated. The linewidth of such system is in detail analyzed in dressed states. It is shown that coherence effects can lead to narrowing or widening the linewidth of lasers with and without inversion. Whether narrowing or widening depends on models and parameters. The contribution of the coherences to linewidth is smaller than that of the populations and can be neglected for a strong driving field. [WT5HZ]

Noise reduction via noise in a laser without inversion

Xiangming Hu, Jin-sheng Peng

The effects of the pump phase noise on the linewidth of the -laser without inversion are studied. Although the finite pump phase noise is added to the spontaneous emission noise, the linewidth of the -laser without inversion can be reduced. Physically this is interpreted as the enhancement of the atomic-coherence-induced noise correlation via the pump phase noise.
