Abstract

In this paper we present the values we obtained for the lifetime of the $5 ^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ level of $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ using the Hanle effect. These measurements were carried out using two different methods: through a multichannel signal analyzer by photon counting and through a new method based on the determination of the normalized second-order factorial moment ${n}^{(2)}(T)$ of the fluorescence obtained. We discuss the results and advantages of the new method.

Level-crossing detection through measurement of the second factorial moment of photon-counting distribution

M. Á. Rebolledo, J. J. Sanz

A level-crossing detection method is presented and developed based on measurement of the normalized second factorial moment n((2))(T) of the photon-counting distribution of the resultant fluorescence. Expression n((2))(T) is obtained, and the errors expected in the determination of signal width and crossing field are theoretically studied. The validity of the approximations performed to establish the theoretical model is proved by an experiment with a square-wave periodically modulated light beam.

Hyperfine structure and lifetime measurements of the second-excited D states of rubidium and cesium by cascade fluorescence spectroscopy

C. Tai, W. Happer, R. Gupta

The hyperfine structure of the second-excited $D$ states of $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$, $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$, and $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ has been measured by the method of cascade-radio-frequency spectroscopy and cascade-level crossing. The sign of the magnetic-dipole coupling constant $A$ is determined by the method of cascade-decoupling and cascade-radio-frequency spectroscopy with narrow-band excitation. Lifetimes $\ensuremath{\tau}$ of some of these states are measured by the cascade-Hanle effect. We find that for $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$, $A(5^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2}})=14.43\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.23$ MHz, $A(5^{2}D_{\frac{5}{2}})=\ensuremath{-}7.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10$ MHz, $\ensuremath{\tau}(5^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2}})=205\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}40$ nsec; for $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$, $A(5^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2}})=4.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.20$ MHz, $A(5^{2}D_{\frac{5}{2}})=\ensuremath{-}2.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.20$ MHz; for $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$, $A(6^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2}})=16.30\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15$ MHz, $A(6^{2}D_{\frac{5}{2}})=\ensuremath{-}3.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0$ MHz, $\ensuremath{\tau}(6^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2}})=57\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}15$ nsec.

Lifetime measurement of the 6s level of rubidium

E. Gómez, F. Baumer, A. D. Lange +2 more

We present a lifetime measurement of the $6s$ level of rubidium. We use a time-correlated single-photon counting technique on two different samples of rubidium atoms, a vapor cell with variable rubidium density, and a sample of atoms confined and cooled in a magneto-optical trap. The $5{P}_{1∕2}$ level serves as the resonant intermediate step for the two-step excitation to the $6s$ level. We detect the decay of the $6s$ level through the cascade fluorescence of the $5{P}_{3∕2}$ level at 780 nm. The two samples have different systematic effects, but we obtain consistent results that averaged give a lifetime of $45.57\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.17\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ns}$.

Lifetime measurements of rubidium nD3/2 (n=6–9) states using the Hanle effect

William Arie van Wijngaarden, J. Sagle

A Hanle experiment has been used to determine the following radiative lifetimes (in nsec) of rubidium: ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{6\mathit{D}3/2}$=298\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}8, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{7\mathit{D}3/2}$=345\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}9, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{8\mathit{D}3/2}$=586\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}15, and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{9\mathit{D}3/2}$=638\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}17. These data were taken at a temperature of 293 K and are not corrected for effects due to blackbody radiation. The effect of the hyperfine interaction on the Hanle signal is discussed in detail for an excited state of arbitrary angular momentum.

The density dependence of the Hanle effect in the resonance line of atomic barium

F. M. Kelly, M. S. Mathur

The change in the Hanle effect of the singlet resonance line of neutral barium has been studied over a wide range of density. The low density region has been used to confirm a lifetime of 8.37 ± 0.08 ns for the 6s6p1P1 level. We have determined the cross sections for the relaxation of the multipole moment of order 2 for collisions of the excited level with the ground level and with the metastable 6s5d1D2 level, and comparisons are made with the measured value of [Formula: see text] for the ground level with theoretical predictions.

Error optimization in the detection of level crossing through the measurement of n^(2)(T)

J. J. Sanz, M. Á. Rebolledo

Equations for calculation of the crossing point determination error and the signal width error in level-crossing experiments are generalized when the normalized second-order factorial moment of the fluorescence obtained is measured. To minimize the magnitude of these errors we study the behavior of these values on varying the magnetic field sweep interval, the counting time, and the mean fluorescence intensity.
