What we can learn about single photons in a two-photon interference experiment

Dmitry Strekalov, T. B. Pittman, Yanhua H. Shih

We report a two-photon interference experiment in which a single-photon wave-packet concept fails to give a correct prediction, but the two-photon wave-packet, or biphoton, concept is helpful. Based on our experiment, we argue that single-photon wave-packet information available from two-photon measurement is limited.

Teaching the concept of uncertainty principle by simulating wave packet for a localized particle

Iqbal Singh, K Khun Khun

Abstract Concept of wave packet is one of the most relevant topic of quantum mechanics but teaching it in an abstract way does not enhance the learning of students. On the other hand visualizations make such topics very easy in classroom learning. To capture the attention of students in classroom teaching, a unique way to simulate the wave packet associated with a localized particle is presented in this paper. This work describes an easy method to generate data for tracing a wave packet by organising an excel spreadsheet. This method is simple and aids the understanding wave packet modulation with variation in range of wave vectors of constituents matter waves. The obtained uncertainty product in position and momentum of the particle can be further utilized to verify Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.

Wave Packet and de Broglie's Wave-particle Duality

Caio Lima Firme

This chapter presents the double-slit experiment and Davisson-Germer’s corresponding experiment that proved the wave-like nature of the electron in 1927. Next, it shows the basics of the special theory of relativity which is used by de Broglie to obtain the wave-particle duality. Afterwards, it displays the most important properties of a periodic wave along with the concepts of travelling wave, composite wave, group velocity, wave packet and single wave packet. These sections are the basis for understanding the de Broglie’s work where he used the special theory of relativity, Einstein’s quantum theory of light and the features of the periodic waves to obtain his famous constant relation of the product of linear momentum (of a particle) and wavelength (of a wave) which became the most important quantum concept used by Schrödinger to develop the quantum wave theory. In the end, a do-it-yourself activity is also given in order to plot several wave packets. (153 words).
