Ordered Structures of a Few Ions in the Paul Trap

Shi Lei, Zhu XiWen, Feng Mang +1 more

We have carried out a molecular dynamics stimulation for a few Paul-trapped ions exerted by a trapping force, inter-ion Coulomb forces and a damping force from a cooling source. The geometric structure in the ordered phase is studied in detail. It is found that the structure varies regularly with the ion number and forms concentric shells when the ion number grows. Furthermore, the similarity between the ions' structure and the potential of the trap is also presented. Finally, the case in the second stability region is investigated, which gives a comparison with that in the first stability region.

Simulating the spin-boson model with a controllable reservoir in an ion trap

G. -X. Wang, Yukai Wu, R. Yao +11 more

The spin-boson model is a prototypical model for open quantum dynamics. Here we simulate the spin-boson model using a chain of trapped ions in which a spin is coupled to a structured reservoir of bosonic modes. We engineer the spectral density of the reservoir by adjusting the ion number, the target ion location, the laser detuning to the phonon sidebands, and the number of frequency components in the laser, and we observe their effects on the collapse and revival of the initially encoded information. Our work demonstrates that the ion trap is a powerful platform for simulating open quantum dynamics with complicated reservoir structures.

The Trapped-Ion Ultrametric Testbed: A Falsifiability Register for Testing p-Adic Structure in Quantum Dynamics

Rowan Brad Quni-Gudzinas

Sixteen published records from a single research program, spanning December 2025 to August 2026, are here organized into one testable claim: trapped-ion quantum simulators are the first near-term platform on which ultrametric (p-adic) structure in quantum dynamics can be accepted or rejected by measurement, and passive, dissipation-structured hardware is the engineering embodiment of that structure. The synthesis contributes a falsifiability register: five observables, each with a pre-registered prediction, a kill-condition, and an apparatus already demonstrated in the cited records. It also records what the program has already ruled out, including the finding that generic Page-Wootters clock-rest coupling violates ultrametricity at a 29-35 percent rate while diagonal coupling yields exact ultrametric structure -- the very asymmetry the trapped-ion protocol measures -- and the economic finding that trapped ions rank last among seventeen platforms on a joules-per-solution basis, making the ion trap a physics testbed rather than a production economics play. The paper discloses its premise depth: the falsifiable content rests on two named imported inputs, and the claims end where those inputs begin. A practitioner section specifies what can be built today without any new theory.
