Double-Slit Interferometry: The De Broglie Particle-Wave Duality

Jacques Rault

The de Broglie wavelength λ= h/mv of simple particles (photon, electron, neutron) atoms (helium, neon) and molecules (fullerene, fluorous porphyrin) deduced from the de Broglie (dB) relation and those measured by double slits interferometry are compared. The de Broglie relation is verified in very large domains of velocity v and mass m of the particles, respectively 8 and 13 orders of magnitude. In this paper one analyses the interference spectra of photons and electrons and give the Intensity Relations IR(II-DI) between the interference intensity (II) by two slits and the diffracted intensity (DI) by one slit. The double slits interference in the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation is an interference of particle and pilot waves, internal and external waves each passing by a different slit. The velocities of these waves are discussed. From the universal de Broglie relation and the relation vp = vw between the particle and pilot waves one shows that only in the domain of the maximum of the light spectrum (λm~ 550 µm) the dB relation leads to the Plank-Einstein (PE) relation hν=mc 2 .A measure of the mass of the photon m* = 4 10 -36 Kg is deduced. The de Broglie relation for different wave lengths shows that the PE relation must be modified, the velocity of light is not constant as shown by various experiments: Global Positioning Systems GPS, red shift in astronomy etc. This has been discussed by Marmet in years 2000.The same conclusion was given by Sato in 2010 for electromagnetic waves. The trajectories of electrons observed by Jönsson by double slits interferometry and then calculated by Gondran according to the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation are then analyzed in detail. The correlations observed between the properties of these trajectories at short and long distances from the slits permit to give the general equation of the trajectories. The origin of these properties is discussed in the framework model of De Broglie and Bohm, assuming that at any point the intensity of the two waves (particle and pilot wave) passing by the 2 slits are deceasing functions of the distance to the slits. The changes of direction of the trajectories are explained.

The Wave Properties of Particles

A.P. French, Edwin F. Taylor

The fact that light has some of the properties of ordinary particles led Louis de Broglie, in 1924, to construct a theory on the proposition that photons are particles. In the theory of wave motions, there is in general a difference between the speed of waves of some uniquely defined frequency, and the speed of a localized pulse such as de Broglie proposed to associate with a moving particle. Most often, one wishes to know the de Broglie wavelength for particles of a given kinetic energy. C. J. Davisson and L. H. Germer deliberately used single crystals as targets, and proceeded to discover just the kind of behavior that de Broglie's hypothesis of particle waves predicted. The development of electron microscopy, with its use of extremely well collimated, highly monoenergetic electron beams, has led to some beautiful demonstrations of the wave properties of electrons in analogs of optical diffraction phenomena. The strong reflection is a wave-like phenomenon totally unexpected from the classical picture of electrons.

Theory of Matter Wave Excitation by Virtual Photons

Zhiguo Zhang

To address the theoretical gap in traditional de Broglie wave theory that fails to clarify the physical excitation mechanism of matter waves, this paper proposes the de Broglie Wave-Virtual Photon Exchange Synchronization Law and reveals the intrinsic physical origin of de Broglie matter waves from the perspective of virtual photon exchange. Based on well-recognized physical formulas including the de Broglie energy-frequency relation, the relativistic energy-momentum relation, and the core equations of quantum electrodynamics (QED), this paper carries out rigorous quantitative derivation and obtains the de Broglie Wave-Virtual Photon Exchange Synchronization Formula , which describes the relation between virtual photon exchange and the evolution of de Broglie waves. Physical analysis of the formula shows that the de Broglie matter wave is not an intrinsic and spontaneous property of particles, but a dynamic wave effect directly excited by momentum exchange between virtual photons and particles in electromagnetic interaction. The frequency, wavelength, and wave properties of the de Broglie wave are uniquely determined by the intensity and frequency of virtual photon exchange, and the two sets of physical quantities maintain strict synchronization during physical evolution. In addition, this paper clarifies the velocity-dependent modulation effect of virtual photon exchange on de Broglie waves: the modulation effect is weak at low velocities, becomes significant at high velocities, and the key wave parameters (frequency, momentum correlation) of de Broglie waves and virtual photons achieve quantitative unification as the particle velocity approaches the speed of light. This theory establishes a rigorous, quantitative, and unified relation between the virtual photon exchange mechanism and the origin of de Broglie waves, improves the physical interpretation of matter wave origin, and provides a new theoretical perspective for the study of wave-particle duality and electromagnetic interaction of microscopic particles.
