Many-Body Delocalization as Symmetry Breaking

Samuel J. Garratt, J. T. Chalker

We present a framework in which the transition between a many-body localized (MBL) phase and an ergodic one is symmetry breaking. We consider random Floquet spin chains, expressing their averaged spectral form factor (SFF) as a function of time in terms of a transfer matrix that acts in the space direction. The SFF is determined by the leading eigenvalues of this transfer matrix. In the MBL phase, the leading eigenvalue is unique, as in a symmetry-unbroken phase, while in the ergodic phase and at late times the leading eigenvalues are asymptotically degenerate, as in a system with degenerate symmetry-breaking phases. We identify the broken symmetry of the transfer matrix, introduce a local order parameter for the transition, and show that the associated correlation functions are long-ranged only in the ergodic phase.

Condensation of fluctuations in the Ising model: A transition without spontaneous symmetry breaking

Annalisa Fierro, Antonio Coniglio A, Marco Zannetti

The ferromagnetic transition in the Ising model is the paradigmatic example of ergodicity breaking accompanied by symmetry breaking. It is routinely assumed that the thermodynamic limit is taken with free or periodic boundary conditions. More exotic symmetry-preserving boundary conditions, like cylindrical antiperiodic, are less frequently used for special tasks, such as the study of phase coexistence or the roughening of an interface. Here we show, instead, that when the thermodynamic limit is taken with these boundary conditions, a novel type of transition takes place below T_{c} (the usual Ising transition temperature) without breaking either ergodicity or symmetry. Then the low-temperature phase is characterized by a regime (condensation) of strong magnetization's fluctuations which replaces the usual ferromagnetic ordering. This is due to critical correlations perduring for all T below T_{c}. The argument is developed exactly in the d=1 case and numerically in the d=2 case.

Ginzburg-Landau Theory for Non-Invertible Symmetry-Breaking Transitions

Vibhu Ravindran, Luisa Eck, Xie Chen

Recently, a generalized Landau paradigm has been proposed, in which a broad class of "unconventional" phase transitions lying beyond the original symmetry-breaking framework of Landau are understood as the symmetry-breaking transitions of generalized symmetries. In particular, in (1+1)D, such "topological" or "deconfined" transitions can be mapped to the symmetry-breaking transitions of non-invertible symmetries. How to extract the universal dynamical properties of the transitions from this understanding? In this paper, we follow the Ginzburg-Landau philosophy and develop a field-theoretic description of such critical points in terms of the fluctuations of local order parameters, now of non-invertible symmetries. The Symmetry Topological Field Theory formalism plays a central role in our analysis, allowing us to identify the algebra of local order parameters from the Lagrangian algebra of a (2+1)D topological order. We illustrate the key ideas and the full steps of this generalized Ginzburg-Landau procedure using the transitions between gapped phases with a simple non-invertible symmetry --- the Rep($S_3$) symmetry.
