Tensor operators: Constructions and applications for long-range interaction systems

Florian Fröwis, Volckmar Nebendahl, Wolfgang Dür

We consider the representation of operators in terms of tensor networks and their application to the ground-state approximation and time evolution of systems with long-range interactions. We provide an explicit construction to represent an arbitrary many-body Hamilton operator in terms of a one-dimensional tensor network (i.e., as a matrix product operator). For pairwise interactions, we show that such a representation is always efficient and requires a tensor dimension growing only linearly with the number of particles. For systems obeying certain symmetries or restrictions we find optimal representations with minimal tensor dimension. We discuss the analytic and numerical approximation of operators in terms of low-dimensional tensor operators. We demonstrate applications for time evolution and the ground-state approximation, in particular for long-range interaction with inhomogeneous couplings. The operator representations are also generalized to other geometries such as trees and two-dimensional lattices, where we show how to obtain and use efficient tensor network representations respecting a given geometry.

Operator-sum representation of time-dependent density operators and its applications

D. M. Tong, L. C. Kwek, C. H. Oh +2 more

We show that any arbitrary time-dependent density operator of an open system can always be described in terms of an operator-sum representation (Kraus representation) regardless of its initial condition and the path of its evolution in the state space, and we provide a general expression of Kraus operators for arbitrary time-dependent density operator of an $N$-dimensional system. Moreover, applications of our result are illustrated through several examples.

Stochastic unraveling of the time-evolution operator of open quantum systems

A. Karpati, Петер Адам, Z. Kis +1 more

The time-evolution operator of open quantum systems is determined generally via a stochastic operator sum representation. Quantum trajectories originating from any quantum trajectory method applicable to the system can be used for the construction. The result does apply to non-Markovian systems as well. The computational time reducement is in the order of the dimension of the Hilbert space compared to conventional quantum trajectory methods combined with algebraic reconstruction of the map. To demonstrate the efficiency of the method, the effects of decoherence are analysed for a C-NOT gate realized by two atoms in a cavity.
