Ultrafast coherent transients & excited state dynamics in gases and solids

Daniel Dawson

I. A new technique utilizing the electro-optic frequency switching of a single mode ( 6 Mhz) dye laser was used to observe free induction decay and optical nutation in iodine gas and optical nutation in an organic mixed crystal (pentacene in p-terphenyl) at low temperature. A new technique, incoherent resonance decay (IRO) was also developed. These experiments allow one to determine T_1 and T_2, the longitudinal and transverse relaxation times of the excited ensemble, in analogy with magnetic resonance. For I_2(g) at O∙C; T_l = 2.3 x 10^(-7) sec, T_2 ≃ 1 x 10^(-7) sec. These techniques are limited to a time scale > 10 nsec. II. The construction and characterization of cw, mode-locked dye laser capable of putting out a continuous train of reproducible sub-picosecond pulses is described. Experiments utilizing this laser for the measurement of picosecond coherent transients and time resolved absorption spectroscopy are proposed.

Near-threshold behavior of multimode continuous-wave dye lasers with amplitude-modulated pump

Stephen H. Chakmakjian, Stephanos Papademetriou, Karl W. Koch +1 more

We use amplitude-modulation techniques to investigate the response of a multimode dye laser when its pump intensity is sinusoidally amplitude modulated. A theoretical model is presented based on a Floquet analysis to obtain the stationary-state first-harmonic response of the population inversion and that of the laser intensity as a function of modulation frequency. We perform experiments in multimode continuous-wave dye lasers to demonstrate the validity of this theory in describing the behavior of multimode lasers operating near the lasing threshold.

Measurement of ultrafast dephasing time of ruby by transient grating with incoherent light

Ruihua Zhang, Qian Jiang, Zuhe Yu +2 more

Dephasing time T 2 of ruby in the absorption band 4 T 2 has been measured for the first time using the method of transient grating with incoherent light. The population grating was induced in the material by two broad-band nanosecond pulses of a dye laser and probed by a Continuous Wave (CW) Ar + laser. At room temperature, T 2 =0.04 similar 0.08 ps was obtained when the sample was excited at λ = 5640Å.
