Ground-state information geometry and quantum criticality in an inhomogeneous spin model

Abstract

We investigate the ground-state Riemannian metric and the cyclic quantum distance of an inhomogeneous quantum spin-1/2 chain in a transverse field. This model can be diagonalized by using a general canonical transformation to the fermionic Hamiltonian mapped from the spin system. The ground-state Riemannian metric is derived exactly on a parameter manifold ring S1, which is introduced by performing a gauge transformation to the spin Hamiltonian through a twist operator. The cyclic ground-state quantum distance and the second derivative of the ground-state energy are studied in different exchange coupling parameter regions. Particularly, we show that, in the case of exchange coupling parameter Ja = Jb, the quantum ferromagnetic phase can be characterized by an invariant quantum distance and this distance will decay to zero rapidly in the paramagnetic phase.

Ground-state Riemannian metric, cyclic quantum distance, and the quantum criticality in an inhomogeneous Ising spin chain

We investigate the ground-state Riemannian metric and the cyclic quantum distance of an inhomogeneous quantum Ising spin-1/2 chain in a transverse field. This model can be diagonalized by using a general canonical transformation to the fermionic Hamiltonian mapped from the spin system. The ground-state Riemannian metric is derived exactly on a parameter manifold ring $S^1$, which is introduced by performing a gauge transformation to the spin Hamiltonian through a twist operator. The ground-state cyclic quantum distance and the second derivative of the ground-state energy are studied in different inhomogeneous exchange coupling parameter region. Particularly, we show that the quantum ferromagnetic phase in the uniform Ising chain can be characterized by an invariant cyclic quantum distance with a constant ground-state Riemannian metric, and this metric will rapidly decay to zero in the paramagnetic phase.

Quantum distance and the Euler number index of the Bloch band in a one-dimensional spin model

Yu-Quan Ma

We study the Riemannian metric and the Euler characteristic number of the Bloch band in a one-dimensional spin model with multisite spins exchange interactions. The Euler number of the Bloch band originates from the Gauss-Bonnet theorem on the topological characterization of the closed Bloch states manifold in the first Brillouin zone. We study this approach analytically in a transverse field XY spin chain with three-site spin coupled interactions. We define a class of cyclic quantum distance on the Bloch band and on the ground state, respectively, as a local characterization for quantum phase transitions. Specifically, we give a general formula for the Euler number by means of the Berry curvature in the case of two-band models, which reveals its essential relation to the first Chern number of the band insulators. Finally, we show that the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in zero temperature can be distinguished by the Euler number of the Bloch band.

Quantum information geometry by the ground-state energy and the criticality of the scalar curvature

Takemi Nakamura

We introduce the Hessian of the negative ground-state energy as a Riemannian metric on the parametric family of the ground states of a parameterized Hamiltonian of a quantum system and study the critical behavior of the scalar curvature of this new metric. Taking the anisotropic XY chain in a transverse field as an example, we study the critical behaviors of the scalar curvature associated with the quantum phase transitions both numerically and analytically. The behaviors are found to be different from those of the Fubini–Study metric but in agreement with the scalar curvature for the Bogoliubov–Kubo–Mori metric in thermodynamic geometry from the perspective of the universality class. We also briefly discuss the Legendre structure concerning this Hessian metric.

Geometric phase and quantum phase transition in an inhomogeneous periodic XY spin- 12 model

Yu-Quan Ma, Shu Chen

The notion of geometric phase has been recently introduced to analyze the quantum phase transitions of many-body systems from the geometrical perspective. In this work, we study the geometric phase of the ground state for an inhomogeneous period-two anisotropic $XY$ model in a transverse field. This model encompasses a group of familiar spin models as its special cases and shows a richer critical behavior. The exact solution is obtained by mapping on a fermionic system through the Jordan-Wigner transformation and constructing the relevant canonical transformation to realize the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian coupled in the $k$ space. The results show that there may exist more than one quantum phase transition point at some parameter regions and these transition points correspond to the divergence or extremum properties of the Berry curvature.

Classifying and measuring geometry of a quantum ground state manifold

Michael Kolodrubetz, Vladimir Gritsev, Anatoli Polkovnikov

From the Aharonov-Bohm effect to general relativity, geometry plays a central role in modern physics. In quantum mechanics, many physical processes depend on the Berry curvature. However, recent advances in quantum information theory have highlighted the role of its symmetric counterpart, the quantum metric tensor. In this paper, we perform a detailed analysis of the ground state Riemannian geometry induced by the metric tensor, using the quantum $XY$ chain in a transverse field as our primary example. We focus on a particular geometric invariant, the Gaussian curvature, and show how both integrals of the curvature within a given phase and singularities of the curvature near phase transitions are protected by critical scaling theory. For cases where the curvature is integrable, we show that the integrated curvature provides a new geometric invariant, which like the Chern number characterizes individual phases of matter. For cases where the curvature is singular, we classify three types (integrable, conical, and curvature singularities) and detail situations where each type of singularity should arise. Finally, to connect this abstract geometry to experiment, we discuss three different methods for measuring the metric tensor: via integrating a properly weighted noise spectral function or by using leading-order responses of the work distribution to ramps and quenches in quantum many-body systems.

Quantum correlations in a cluster spin model with three-spin interactions

F Sadaf, V. Subrahmanyam

Abstract An exactly solvable cluster spin model with three-spin interaction couplings Jx(for XZX spin components) and J y (for YZY spin components) in the presence of a transverse magnetic field h for a spin chain is investigated. For h = 0, and with only one non-zero interaction strength, the ground state is the cluster state. Through the Jordan–Wigner fermion mapping, the odd sites and the even sites form two separate transverse-XY chains, connected only through the boundary terms. Consequently, all measures of quantum correlations for nearest neighbour spins, the concurrence, the quantum mutual information and the quantum discord are all zero in the ground state. The dynamics is spin conserving for J y = J x , exhibiting a line of critical points for | h / J x | ⩽ 2 , with an uncorrelated direct product ground state for | h / J x | > 2 . There are several quantum critical points in the parameter space, with multi-fold degenerate ground states. The magnetisation and the global entanglement measure exhibit strong singular features for the spin conserving case. The next-neighbour quantum correlation measures are investigated analytically, which exhibit singular features in the vicinity of degeneracy critical points. The Jy - and h- derivatives of the concurrence exhibit singular peak behaviour near the degeneracy critical points, except in the spin conserving case where the derivatives are zero.
