Abstract

Several expcri1nents have been reported for the generation of squeezed light since 1985 [l]. All these experiments employ a coherent source, either a single-mode cw laser or a mode-locked pulsed laser. In this paper we report an experiment in which squeezed light is generated by pumping a traveling-wave parametric amplifier with a partially coherent laser.

Generation of picosecond squeezed pulses using an all-solid-state cw mode-locked source

E. M. Daly, A.S. Bell, Erling Riis +1 more

We have produced squeezed states of light using a degenerate optical parametric amplifier pumped by an all-solid-state cw mode-locked laser source. The process resulted in squeezed light pulses of less than 3 ps in duration. Up to 0.7 dB of amplitude-squeezed light at 1047 nm and 0.5 dB of noise reduction in vacuum were observed directly. The inferred squeezing level in both cases, after all propagation losses in the detection system and the effects of spatial and temporal mode overlap had been taken into account, was 1.8 dB.

Spatial effects in traveling-wave squeezed-state generation and detection

Recent experiments that have demonstrated the generation of quadrature-squeezed light in the traveling-wave configuration of an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) indicate that the observable squeezing is largely limited by the effects of diffraction in the parametric process1 and by the spatio-temporal mismatch between the generated squeezed mode and the local-oscillator (LO) mode employed in homodyne detection of squeezing.2

Partially coherent squeezed light: generation and detection

Prem Kumar, Orhan Aytür

Squeezed light with partial coherence is generated via optical parametric amplification (OPA) in a KTiOPO4 crystal that is pumped by the second harmonic of a Q-switched multimode Nd:YAG laser.1 More than 1 dB of squeezing is observed when a proper mode of the downconverted light is homodyned with the 380-ns multilongitudinal-mode local oscillator (LO) pulse. In such a system, large OPA gain is easily obtained in a single-crystal signal-pass setup. The detection of squeezed light is, however, not straightforward. In the usual implementation of a balanced homodyne detection scheme,2 the vacuum-noise level, as measured on a radio frequency spectrum analyzer, is determined by the average LO power. If the LO is derived from a Q-switched laser, as is the case in our experiment, the associated peak power can easily saturate the detectors and the subsequent electronics. To overcome this limitation, we have implemented a hybrid frequency/time domain measurement scheme in which the vacuum noise level is determined by the peak (instead of the average) LO power. The LO average power requirement is thus relaxed and the detector saturation problem avoided.

Generation of squeezed light and its effect on nonlinear optical processes

Summary form only given. We describe the generation and detection of broadband squeezed states at 1047 nm in a lithium triborate (LiB/sub 3/O/sub 5/) degenerate optical parametric amplifier (DOPA). The light source used is a laser-diode-pumped additive pulse mode-locked Nd:LiYF/sub 4/ laser, which produces pulses 3 ps in duration at repetition rate of 140 MHz, and the average output power is 1 W. The fundamental light is frequency doubled in an external ring enhancement cavity, and the resulting high peak power of the doubled light means that it is possible to produce significant squeezing even in a single-pass or traveling-wave parametric amplifier.

Multimode squeezed light generation and characterization

Alexander Chudakov, Vladislav Severin, Anastasia Poshevkina +5 more

Nowadays, the realization of quantum computations and communications based on continuous variables has attracted a significant attention due to a substantial expansion of the system dimensionality. The main progress in this area is attributed to the implementation of multimode systems based on squeezed states of light. One of the simplest ways to generate such states relies upon their producing in a single-pass optical parametric amplifier (OPA) using ultrafast pumping. However, for homodyne detection of such multimode states, the profile of the local oscillator (LO) must perfectly match the profile of the measured mode. Usually, this is not the case; therefore a proper treatment of multimode squeezing is required. In this work, we study both theoretically and experimentally the multimode squeezed light generated in type-0 and type-II OPA. We characterize such sources and investigate the degree of squeezing in dependence on the LO spectral profile, employing a pulse shaping technique. The theoretical analysis is performed using the Schmidt-mode theory. This work might have a significant impact on the realization of multimode quantum protocols
