Line shape in polarization spectroscopy for the J_g = 0 → J_e = 1 transition: an analytical study

Abstract

We present a theoretical study of polarization spectroscopy (PS) for the Jg=0→Je=1 transition. An analytical form of the line shape in PS is obtained in the Doppler-broadened limit up to the first (arbitrary) order of the Rabi frequency of the probe (pump) beam; this shape is influenced by the coherent effect resulting from nonlinear interactions between laser beams via atoms. The analytical solutions of the slope at the resonance and amplitude of the line shape in PS also are obtained.

Analytical Study of Polarization Spectroscopy for the Jg=0 → Je=1 Transition

Heung‐Ryoul Noh

This work presents a theoretical study on the analytical calculation of the lineshape of polarization spectroscopy (PS) for the transition line $5s^2\;^1S_0{\rightarrow}5s5p\;^1P_1$ of $^{88}Sr$ . From the obtained analytical form of the PS spectrum, we were able to identify how the saturation affected the lineshape of the PS spectrum. The results obtained will be useful for polarization spectroscopy experiments using the alkaline-earth atoms such as Sr or Yb.

Analytical Solutions of Birefringence and Dichroism Spectroscopy for the Jg = 0 → Je = 1 Transition

Heung‐Ryoul Noh

We present accurate analytical solutions of the lineshapes of birefringence (rotation) and dichroism (absorption) spectroscopy for a circular anisotropic medium composed of atoms of the transition $J_g=0{\rightarrow}J_e=1$ . The susceptibility of a weak probe beam was analytically calculated and was averaged over a Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution. The lineshapes of the two spectroscopies were then presented in analytical forms at arbitrary values of the linewidths of the inhomogeneous (Doppler) broadening and the homogeneous (natural) broadening of the atoms.

Susceptibility for Doppler-broadened two-level atoms in pump–probe spectroscopy: analytical solutions revisited

Heung‐Ryoul Noh

We present an analytical study of susceptibility in pump–probe laser spectroscopy for an atomic medium composed of two-level atoms in the Doppler-broadened limit. We derive an accurate analytical formula for susceptibility up to the first (arbitrary) order at the Rabi frequency of the probe (pump) beam. This is expressed in a succinct single term rather than as a complicated summation, as presented in previous papers. We also derive analytical solutions for the linewidth and peak value of the absorption spectrum of the probe beam.

Polarization spectroscopy of the 1S0-3P1 transition of mercury isotopes at 253.7 nm

Xiaohu Fu, Kangkang Liu Kangkang Liu, Ru-Chen Zhao +4 more

We experimentally observe polarization spectroscopy (PS) of the S01-P31 transition of mercury atom gases at 253.7 nm. The PS signal can be observed in all six richly abundant isotopes and the PS signal of six transitions for laser cooling are all clear and of a dispersive line shape. The optimized pump power and probe power are found for the PS of Hg202. We find the linearly polarized component in the pump beam will distort the original PS signal due to the use of linear PS. Consequently, the purity of the pump beam is crucial to laser frequency stabilization by PS.

Polarization spectroscopy of 87Rb-D2 line using structured light: controlling the line shape of closed hyperfine transition

Samim Akhtar, Aparajita Das, Md. Mabud Hossain

Abstract In this article, we present the influence of structured light on the line shape of closed hyperfine transition F = 2 → F ′ = 3 of 87Rb-D2 line by monitoring the linearly polarized probe Gaussian beam in the presence of circularly polarized pump Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beam having different orders of orbital angular momentum (OAM). It is observed that both the amplitude and line-width of the closed hyperfine signal under polarization spectroscopy (PS) are enhanced (reduced) with the increasing values of the pump light ellipticity for the non-zero-order (zero-order) OAM. Furthermore, the dispersion-like PS signal of the closed hyperfine transition is modified by varying the pump power and angular mismatch of the pump-probe beams. The experimental results demonstrate that the anisotropy of an atomic medium can be influenced by the OAM of light and can be further modulated by tuning the ellipticity of the structured light.

Theory of lineshapes in optical–optical double resonance spectroscopy

Kevin K. Lehmann

This paper presents a theory of lineshapes for molecular Optical-Optical Double Resonance (DR) Spectroscopy with arbitrary strength for both pump and probe fields using the steady-state solutions for the 3-level density matrix. When Doppler broadening can be neglected, the results are analytical, and the probe spectrum is a pair of Lorentzian lines that display Autler-Townes splitting, each with an angular frequency half-width half maximum equal to the relaxation rates, which are assumed to be equal. When Doppler broadening is introduced, one must resort to numerical integration except for the limit of weak pump and probe fields. When the Doppler width is assumed to be much larger than the pump and probe Rabi frequencies and the probe frequency is higher than that of the pump, the calculated DR lineshapes are found to be Lorentzian with a strong pump field limit width that is proportional to the pump Rabi frequency, which is commonly known as power broadening. However, the width does not equal that Rabi frequency and is different for co- and counter-propagating pump and probe fields. Furthermore, that broadening is largely inhomogeneous, despite the Lorentzian shape. The saturation power is found to be about 4 times higher than for the bare probe transition with the same relaxation rate, dramatically lower than that expected if the width is interpreted as homogeneous.
