Propagation and amplification of ultrashort light pulses in a resonant two-level medium: finite-difference time-domain analysis

A.V. Tarasishin, Sergey A. Magnitskii, Aleksei M. Zheltikov

Propagation and amplification of an ultrashort laser pulse in a two-level medium is numerically investigated with the use of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) procedure simultaneously solving Maxwell and Schrodinger equations with no assumptions characteristic of slowly varying envelope approximation. Comparison of the results of FDTD numerical simulations with the predictions of the pulse area theorem has demonstrated that the developed numerical procedure provides an adequate description of pulse evolution in a two-level medium. Amplification of ultrashort light pulses in a two-level medium is analyzed. Two methods of improving the gain of ultrashort pulses in a two-level medium by modulating the spatial distribution of dipole moments of resonant transitions and using initially chirped frequency-detuned pulses are explored.

The theory of temporal compression of intense laser pulses in a metal vapor

M.J. Shaw, John K. Crane

Numerical simulations of the compression of laser pulses by propagation through a medium of two-level near resonant atoms is presented. The compression of long pulses (>10 ns) whose peak Rabi frequency is comparable to the laser detuning from the atomic transition is addressed. This regime is one in which an accurate description of the physics requires solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equations. A model to investigate nonlinear effects on the compression process has been developed. The analysis begins with a study of the compression of optimally chirped pulses of various fluences. The onset of the nonlinear effects and their ramifications on the compression process are addressed.>

Anomalous components of the scattering under the conditions of a developed instability of laser radiation in a resonant medium

Alexei G. Leonov, A. A. Panteleev, Andrei N Starostin +1 more

Experimental and theoretical investigations were made of the characteristics of an 'anomalous' component of the scattering of high-intensity laser radiation in a resonant medium (sodium vapour) observed earlier in the frequency range ω L > ω D2 . The appearance of this component had been attributed by other authors to parametric downconversion. Contrary to this interpretation, the component in question was observed also at frequencies of ω L < ω D1 . An analysis showed that the generation of this component and its properties can be explained fully by a four-wave interaction in a gas of three-level atoms.
